Dr. Ronald McLean has been named the new director of the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at SBH Health System, replacing the late Dr. Ronald Verrier.

A general and trauma surgeon at SBH since 2002, Dr. McLean began his medical career as a dentist, later getting his medical degree from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine here in New York City and completing a General Surgery residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.

“I am enthusiastically looking forward to improving all aspects of Wound Care and Hyperbaric Therapy in clinical care, education and research,” said Dr. McLean. “There are many people in our community who rely on this service for their continued health and well-being.”

The center, which is a collaborative effort between SBH Health System and Restorix Health, a national wound management organization, offers a comprehensive approach for patients with chronic wound issues. These include diabetic foot and leg ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, chronic bone infection, acute peripheral arterial insufficiency, radiation and crush injuries and other non-healing wounds.

The Center’s multi-disciplinary team offers a comprehensive approach for patients with chronic wound issues. This includes physicians with advanced training in Vascular and Podiatric Surgery, Wound management and Hyperbaric Medicine and nurses skilled in chronic wound care treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses 100 percent pressurized oxygen to promote healing. It is safe, painless and is utilized in treating many patients with non-healing wounds. It involves spending 90 minute sessions inside a transparent tube while being treated and monitored by highly skilled technicians.

Since the local community has extremely high rates of diabetes, and many diabetics are susceptible to slow and non-healing wounds, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is an important component in the Center’s patient care services.
