The board of trustees and senior administration of SBH Health System are proud to announce the appointment of St. Barnabas Hospital Trustee Afua Atta-Mensah to the Board of Governors of Healthcare Trustees of New York State (HTNYS), a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to strengthening the governance of New York’s non-profit and public healthcare facilities. HTNYS is governed by a board of 25 trustees from healthcare facilities across the state and is an affiliate of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).Ms. Atta-Mensah joined the SBH Board of Trustees in 2014 and has been an active member of the retirement committee. She is the first member of the SBH Board to be elected to Healthcare Trustees of New York State.Currently, Ms. Atta Mensah is director of litigation for the Safety Net Project at the Urban Justice Center. Her background includes director of policy for the Center for Working Families, and staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society. In 2009 she went to Ghana, Africa, as a Fulbright Scholar where she advocated on behalf of indigent women. Throughout her career she has been an advocate for disempowered communities.

Ms. Atta-Mensah earned her Bachelor’s degree from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, where she garnered the Senior Achievement Award and the Leader of the Year Award. She is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law where she was a Stein Scholar and where she has also served as an adjunct law professor.
