The Psychiatry Residency Training Program at St. Barnabas Hospital is a newly ACGME-accredited residency program offering diverse clinical experiences in a multicultural and diverse environment.

Intensive teaching in various clinical settings is complemented by formal conferences, individual supervision, and research and scholarly activities, offering residents full access to the faculty’s expertise and mentorship. The program features training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family and group therapy, and interviewing techniques

Throughout the program, residents are challenged in a myriad of psychiatry subspecialties and gain experience in a variety of treatment modalities. Residents treat their own patients under the supervision of board certified psychiatrists in inpatient, outpatient, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, substance abuse, child psychiatry, consultation psychiatry and emergency psychiatry.

Residents actively participate in:
• Morning reports, daily;
• Multidisciplinary team meetings, weekly;
• Journal club, monthly;
• Lectures and conferences (in a formal protected didactic schedule)
• Psychiatry grand rounds;
• Hospital-wide grand rounds lectures; and
• Off-site graduate medical education programs and national conferences (stipends available).

All conditions of employment including compensation and benefits are negotiated with the Committee of Interns and Resident SEIU; which represents all interns, residents and fellows.

To ensure that the process of selecting residents is consistent with guidelines established by the ACGME, this Program has the following eligibility requirements.

Applicants must document compliance with one of the following:
a. Graduate from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school;
b. Graduate from an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited college of osteopathic medicine; or
c. Be a foreign medical graduate holding a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
