Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgery team at St. Barnabas provides general and specialty care to diseases of the low back and neck such as herniated discs, pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, infections and tumors. They also operate on brain tumors and infections, stroke and all forms of trauma.

Kathryn Ko, chief of neurosurgery, is in the forefront in her field, bringing the latest advances to St. Barnabas. Dr. Ko introduced a minimally invasive procedure to reduce pain caused by disc ruptures in the lumbar spine, using an incision so small, no sutures are required, and there is almost no post-operative pain. This procedure is called minimally invasive lumbar micro discectomy.

Dr. Ko also developed a surgical method for accommodating brain swelling in patients who have suffered a stroke or severe head injury. When the swelling stops, this procedure, called in situ hinge craniectomy, allows the patient’s own bone to be put back into its original position in a 15-minute procedure performed under local anesthesia.

With an outstanding neurosurgery team, superb Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and gleaming new operating suite, St. Barnabas is well-prepared to provide the highest quality neurosurgery services available.
