The teenage years can be an exciting and difficult time in a child’s life, with special health risks and concerns. This can range from issues about body size and proper nutrition, to problems regarding anxiety and depression, to experimentation with such risky behaviors as alcohol, drugs and sex.
In some sections of the Bronx, the stresses of being a teenager can become further exacerbated by the presence of gangs, the high rate of pregnancy, economic blight, and homelessness.
Specialists in our Adolescent Medicine department provide teens with a full scope of healthcare and supportive services in sensitive areas such as obesity, gender expression, depression, teen pregnancy, STDs, and smoking cessation.
We respect the privacy of our patients. All discussions and care, especially with respect to STDs, drug use, and birth control, are kept absolutely confidential.
Teen Health Center
Our team of adolescent medicine specialists works closely with the Teen Health Center, which was established to help teens improve self-esteem, reduce risk-taking behavior, improve academic success, and maintain a healthy life style.
The Teen Health Center is an affiliate of St. Barnabas Hospital, and is made possible by a grant by the Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Program (CAPP) initiative, a NYSDOH-funded program.
