Fellowship in Social Emergency Medicine
Overview
The St. Barnabas Hospital Social Emergency Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program designed to train and educate the fellow in the field of Social Emergency Medicine.
The specialty of Emergency Medicine is ideally situated to study the social determinants of health. This fellowship is designed to research, innovate and implement focused and systemic interventions promoting health equity, to create and perpetuate an organized social emergency medicine research agenda, and to advocate for policy and legislative interventions.
Our location in the south, central Bronx, in New York City’s poorest community, put this fellowship in a unique position to address social, economic, environmental, and legal determinants of health. By partnering with our talented faculty, epidemiologists, researchers, social scientists and community-based organizations, we will better understand and more effectively treat patients in the context of their communities and their lives.
Graduates of this fellowship will learn population health, biostatistics and research design. By the time of graduation, the fellow will be prepared to play a leading role nationally and globally in the development and progression of this exciting sub-specialty of Emergency Medicine.
Mission
The section mission is to define the role that emergency medicine can play in the promotion of health equity and the development of innovations that reduces health disparity – locally, nationally and globally.
We will address the social, economic, environmental, and legal determinants of health by partnering with all potential allies in order to understand and treat patients in the context of their communities and their lives.
The Institution
St. Barnabas Hospital, which is a part of SBH Health System, is a 461-bed, not-for-profit, nonsectarian, acute care community hospital. SBH is a NY State-designated Stroke Center, STEMI Center, AIDS Center and Trauma Center. Our high volume, inner-city Emergency Department sees approximately 90,000 patients per year, including 22,000 patients in our Pediatric ED. We see high rates of trauma, infectious disease, chronic disease and psychopathology. St. Barnabas is one of the oldest health care institutions in the Nation, founded in 1866 as The Home for the Incurables.
As a safety-net hospital, we are dedicated to serving our incredibly diverse and dynamic Bronx community.
Our hospital is the primary clinical affiliate of the CUNY School of Medicine, as well as a clinical affiliate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
As an academic institution, St. Barnabas Hospital is home a large number of Residency Programs, and our Department houses an ACGME 4 year Emergency Medicine Residency with 60 residents.
