Global Health and International Emergency Medicine at SBH
The Department of Emergency Medicine actively supports and encourages Resident and Faculty participation in Global Health. A number of faculty have clinical experience working and volunteering abroad, everywhere from Antarctica to Haiti to Zambia. The Department’s administration is highly supportive of international work.
SBH has for the two past years had residents awarded the prestigious Yale/Stanford J&J Global Health Scholarship, which provided fully-funded travel for our resident awardees to practice and study in Uganda and in South Africa. We have sent graduates on to Fellowships in Global health. And in 2017 we sponsored our First Global Health Conference. Global Health/International EM will be a specialty track available to our Residents, with elective time dedicated to international experiences.
Additionally, the diversity of our patient population brings international medicine to us: we see a range of infectious and tropical disease presenting to our Department as a result of our location here in the Bronx.
The SBH Department of Emergency Medicine recognizes international medicine/global health as a growing and dynamic sub-specialty of Emergency Medicine, and we are excited to continue to grow and develop this area of our Department.
