Toxicology

Picture of SBH EM Toxicology Residents

Division of Toxicology

The SBH Department of Emergency Medicine provides a robust training in toxicologic emergencies.

Residents spend 4 weeks at the New York City Poison Control Center at Bellevue Hospital. During this time, the residents will be taught the protocols for the management of toxic exposures and ingestions, as well as drug interactions and adverse medication reactions.

Our Division of Toxicology provides monthly core content lectures on toxicology, literature review and simulation training.

For residents interested in more in-depth toxicology training and who are interested in pursuing a career as a Toxicologist, our Medical Toxicology Track provides the opportunity to increase knowledge well beyond ACGME requirements, participate in scholarly activity, teach and pursue Toxicology Fellowship.

Project RELAY

SBH is proud to be a founding member institution of Project RELAY. Our patient population suffers from a high burden of opiate addiction and we are consistently NYC’s #1 hospital utilizing RELAY services for our patients.

RELAY is a hospital-based nonfatal opioid overdose response program run by the NYC DOHMH. RELAY dispatches Wellness Advocates, trained peer advocates, to collaborating emergency departments 24/7 to engage with patients immediately following an opioid overdose and offer risk reduction education, overdose prevention training and naloxone, as well as navigation to harm reduction, drug treatment, and other support services.

New York MATTERS

The SBHED Division of Toxicology is actively involved with establishing the framework for effective referral to outpatient opiate intervention resources in NYC through the New York MATTERS program. SBH is one of the first EDs in the city to actively link patients with the NY MATTERS resources.
