Tracks & Sub-Specialization

Written by kcho1

Dedicated track time occurs during the final two years of training. During PGY-3 and PGY-4, residents have dedicated rotations to explore their niche interests in emergency medicine and associated subspecialties. Junior residents have time to do so during their electives and then pick their desired track at the end of the second year.

Critical Care/Resuscitation Track

The critical care track is designed to provide additional training and exposure to critical care resuscitation and ICU management of patients. This is done under the preceptorship of both emergency and critical care trained attendings and includes additional training time in the ICU.

Global and Local Social Emergency Medicine

GLOSEM provides residents with opportunities to engage with healthcare beyond the inpatient setting. Residents are able to incorporate their emergency medicine training on both a local and global scale where they focus on the promotion of health equity work to eliminate health disparities. Many track participants also take this time to participate in an international rotation.

EMS/Disaster Medicine

his subspecialty encompasses the required training and knowledge necessary to provide medical oversight and directorship in various prehospital environments including EMS, Disaster, Event Medicine, and Tactical Operations.

Medical Education

Medical Education is a common area of interest for emergency medicine residents who want to pursue careers in academics. The track is aimed at providing niche development through specialized training as well as the study, practice, and honing of education skills.

Medical Toxicology

The medical toxicology track enhances resident training in medical toxicology with increased involvement at NYC’s Poison Control center and increased involvement in the resident curriculum regarding toxicology and patient mangement. Residents are involved as scholar and educators in the department.

Osteopathic and Manipulative Medicine

The OMM track aims to provide senior residents with advanced training in OMM through work with the SBH Inpatient Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine program. Residents work closely with OMM attendings to perform inpatient consults for the examination and treatment of patients. Allopathic graduates may complete prerequisite osteopathic coursework to qualify as candidates for the track.

Ultrasound

The ultrasound track is designed to provide residents with specialized ultrasound training beyond the basic ACEP core curriculum. Residents will complete an ultrasound-based scholarly activity, participate in quality assurance through ultrasound tape review, and will be involved in both on-shift and during conference education.
