Ultrasound for Faculty Development
The division of ultrasound provides EM faculty with online self-paced modules to keep their ultrasound skills up to date. These training modules are monitored for completion and feedback is provided to faculty. The Division of Ultrasound also offers in-person “touch up” training for faculty who would feel that they would benefit from a focused refresher on a specific type of ultrasound study or skill or who would like to learn the latest cutting-edge ultrasound techniques.
Ultrasound Tape Review
Quality assurance and critical appraisal of ultrasounds performed by faculty and residents are reviewed at this bi-weekly meeting, attended by all ultrasound faculty, ultrasound rotation residents and ultrasound track residents. High-yield feedback is provided directly to our faculty and residents after each tape review session.
EM Resident Ultrasound Rotation
Residents complete 4 weeks of ultrasound-specific training under the supervision of our ultrasound faculty and ultrasound track PGY-4’s. By the end of each 2-week rotation, the resident must demonstrate an understanding in the basic ultrasound physics and concepts such as gain, depth, artifacts; be able to utilize these concepts to improve their images.
Residents must demonstrate proficiency in the following core applications according to ACEP: Trauma (eFAST), renal, pregnancy (pelvic), aorta, echocardiography, biliary, DVT and US guided procedures. Other applications of interest include: abscess/cellulitis, IVC, appendicitis, ocular, thoracic, musculoskeletal and ENT.
In addition to obtaining a minimum of 75 scans per 2-week rotation, the rotating resident also completes assigned quizzes in core US applications, attends bi-weekly ultrasound tape review and presents a 5-10 minute presentation handout about a topic in emergency ultrasonography of their choosing.
Ultrasound Track for EM Residents
The SBHEM Ultrasound Track is designed to provide interested residents with specialized ultrasound training beyond the ACEP core applications. Residents will complete ultrasound-based scholarly activity, provide quality assurance through ultrasound tape review, gain experience teaching ultrasound both at the bedside and in lecture format and present at a regional or national ultrasound conference. Residents will be prepared to succeed as leaders in the ultrasound community upon graduation. Our track residents who wish to pursue Ultrasound Fellowship have a 100% Fellowship acceptance rate.
