Healthy Activities for the entire family

As the snow melts and New York City finally begins to thaw, we start to look for activities that will get us energized and ready for spring. Luckily, the Bronx has plenty of fun to choose from.

One thing we can look forward to this spring is the opening of the Children’s Zoo at the Bronx Zoo. We’ve been waiting for some time for this and it will be the perfect way to celebrate the end of this long and cold winter.

Another wonderful place to be in the spring is at the New York Botanical Garden. As the weather warms up and flowers start to bloom, the garden becomes your own personal backyard to explore. In April, the NYBG hosts Earth Day, a fun day filled with activities, including one where children can make and take home their own terrarium.

Check out Wave Hill, a hidden gem tucked away along the Hudson River in the Bronx. Wave Hill is breathtaking at all times of the year, but spring is perfect for families to come out and enjoy running around the sprawling lawns and participating in the Family Art projects, which occur every weekend afternoon.

There is always something fun going on in a nearby park in the Bronx. Be sure to check out the calendar for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to see what fun is happening near you. As the weather warms up, there are also free activities, including sports and swimming, that you can sign your children up for.

While many don’t think about the beach until summer, it’s a fun idea to pack a lunch and a ball or frisbee and head to Orchard Beach. During the off-season, there is plenty of room to run around, enjoy the playground, ride bikes along the boardwalk, and even explore the surrounding trails. Also, free parking during the off-season makes this a low-cost day of fun.
