Our Dental Anesthesiology Residency Program

Our residency program emphasizes patient care, while also focusing on professionalism and ethics. It includes both didactic and clinical training in basic anesthesiology and sedation.

Clinical curriculum

The clinical curriculum includes rotations in medical anesthesiology, as well as four-week rotations in the following areas: emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, ENT and surgical ICU. There is also a two-week rotation in the PACU.

In addition, the program includes regular assignments to the dental clinic surgery suite and clinic to cover sedations, such as oral, IM and IV, as well as to see oral facial pain patients in the dental clinic. Off-site rotations are also scheduled to enhance the educational process. For example, you participate in a one-week, off-site rotation in Texas to increase your pediatric anesthesia training.

You receive the rotation and lecture schedules in advance, but both are subject to change.

Didactic curriculum

The didactic portion of the program curriculum includes scheduled lectures by the dental anesthesiology staff, oral surgeons and physician faculty members. These lectures cover all aspects of anesthesiology as recommended by the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology.

This portion of the curriculum also includes:

• Chapter reviews
• Journal club
• Literature review and research

In addition, a research project is required.

Our residency program benefits include:

• 20 days of paid vacation per year
• A $1,000 stipend
• Sick leave accrual (one day per month the first year, then 12 days per year)
• Four personal days off per year with pay

All conditions of employment, including compensation and benefits, are negotiated with the Committee of Interns and Residents SEIU, which represents all interns, residents and fellows.

7-1-2024 Salary (6%):

• PGY1: $76,343
• PGY2: $80,757
• PGY3: $86,055

7-1-2025 Salary (5%):

• PGY1: $80,160
• PGY2: $84,795
• PGY3: $90,358

We maintain the following eligibility requirements:

• Graduation from:
  • A CODA-accredited school OR
  • Canadian equivalent

• Submission of:
  • A PASS application
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • National Dental Board scores
  • College and dental school transcripts
  • CBSE scores (no ADAT scores required)

You must also have completed a general practice residency or AEGD program or have at least two years of postdoctoral experience.
