The Dental Anesthesiology Residency Program at SBH

The Dental Anesthesiology Residency Program at St Barnabas Hospital was initiated in 2011 with two residents. It was fully accredited by the ADA Council On Dental Education (CODA). The program offers clinical and didactic training in Oral and Moderate Sedation and General Anesthesia. The program is 36 months long.

The program offers the training at the St Barnabas Hospital Operating Rooms and Dental Clinic Sedation Room and off-site locations around the country.

The Dental Department at St Barnabas Hospital offers a Pediatric Dentistry, an Orthodontic Program and a General Practice Residency Program.

Curriculum, Requirements and Benefits

The program is 36 months in length. The curriculum includes both didactic and clinical training in basic anesthesiology and sedation. The clinical portion has rotations in medical anesthesiology and well as rotations in the following areas: Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, ENT, Surgical ICU and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Each except PACU is 4 weeks in length. In addition, there are regular assignments to the dental clinical surgery suite and clinic to cover sedations such as Oral, IM and IV. Off-site rotations are also scheduled to enhance the educational process.

There are also assignments to Oral Facial Pain patients.

The didactic portion includes scheduled lectures by the dentist anesthesiologist staff, Oral Surgeons and the MD anesthesia faulty covering all aspects of anesthesiology as recommended by the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology. There are chapter reviews, journal club and literature review and research. A research project is a required component of the residency.

The program emphasizes patient care as the most important aspect of the program and also emphasizes professionalism and ethics.

Graduate of an ADA CODA accredited school or Canadian equivalent

GPR or AEGD or at least 2 years post-doctoral experience

ADAT are not required.

Salaries: Commensurate with CIR Bargaining Agreement

PGY 1: $58,067

PGY 2: $61,425

Vacation: 20 days

Sick Days: 1 day/month in first year and 12/year the 2nd and third year

COR Educational Benefit: $1000
