The program is 36 months in length. The curriculum includes both didactic and clinical training in basic anesthesiology and sedation. The clinical portion has rotations in medical anesthesiology and well as rotations in the following areas: Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, ENT, Surgical ICU and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Each except PACU is 4 weeks in length. In addition, there are regular assignments to the dental clinical surgery suite and clinic to cover sedations such as Oral, IM and IV. Off-site rotations are also scheduled to enhance the educational process.
There are also assignments to Oral Facial Pain patients.
The didactic portion includes scheduled lectures by the dentist anesthesiologist staff, Oral Surgeons and the MD anesthesia faulty covering all aspects of anesthesiology as recommended by the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology. There are chapter reviews, journal club and literature review and research. A research project is a required component of the residency.
The program emphasizes patient care as the most important aspect of the program and also emphasizes professionalism and ethics.
