The Pharmacy Residency Program at SBH

Our PGY1 pharmacy residency program at SBH enhances the education of Doctor of Pharmacy graduates, preparing them to become clinical pharmacists.

Residents are trained to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages across various conditions. The program aims to develop pharmacists eligible for board certification and further specialization through PGY2 residency training.

Our Residency

The pharmacy residency program provides comprehensive training across inpatient, administrative, and ambulatory pharmacy practice. Residents gain experience in patient care through ambulatory clinic rotations focused on areas like anticoagulation, heart failure, diabetes, and COPD/asthma, as well as inpatient experiences involving interdisciplinary rounding, medication reconciliation, and critical care. The program emphasizes medication safety, including antimicrobial stewardship and monitoring high-alert medications.

In addition to clinical practice, residents develop leadership and management skills through practice management, administrative tasks, and active community involvement. They engage in project management, residency research, drug utilization evaluations, and quality assurance projects. Mentorship and academic involvement are also integral, with opportunities to precept pharmacy students and earn a teaching certificate.

St. Barnabas Hospital, a 422-bed, not-for-profit, nonsectarian, acute care community hospital and Level 2 Trauma Center authorized to treat the most critically ill and severely injured patients. As a New York State-designated Stroke Center and State-designated AIDS Center, we provide access to much-needed services in our community.
