In the Department of Neurology, our team of physicians and nurses are concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, a complex system that regulates and coordinates body activities. This consists of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous service (including the eyes, ears, skin and other sensory receptors).

Stroke Center

St. Barnabas Hospital holds the honor of being the first hospital in the Bronx to be certified as a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health. Patients with acute stroke receive rapid and high quality care and treatment. The Stroke Center has be the recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award for five consecutive years.

• Cerebrovascular disease, such as stroke
• Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis
• Headache disorders
• Infections of the brain and peripheral nervous system
• Movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease
• Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
• Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy

• Pediatric neurology

Our Stroke Center specializes in the following treatments:

• Intravenous thrombolysis (tPA) for acute stroke
• Affiliation with Montefiore Medical Center for interventional stroke treatment
• CT scan within 20 minutes of arrival for acute stroke
• MRI with Diffusion Weighted Images and CT Angiography
• Dedicated stroke team and stroke unit
• Neurosurgery
• Physical and occupational therapy
• Speech/language and swallow therapy
