The first year of training provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to become a well-rounded physician. You begin with a one-week orientation program, focused on basic communication skills, procedural skills, team-building activities, a scavenger hunt, using the EMR and more.

After orientation, first-year residents start together in the Emergency Department for the first block of residency to work directly with senior residents and faculty members to develop foundational skills in clinical decision-making, patient stabilization and resuscitation. While assuming primary responsibility for patient care, you receive close supervision and clinical teaching.

The second year of training builds on the foundations established during the first year. Your responsibility increases as you gain more experience in caring for critically ill patients. During your second year, you also begin to assume responsibility for teaching medical students and working closely with first-year residents.

• 4 weeks of pediatric ICU at CHAM
• 4 weeks of ED administration
• 4 weeks of toxicology (at NYC Poison Control Center)
• 2 weeks of specialty track
• 4 weeks of vacation (divided into two-week periods)

During your third year, you hone your clinical skills and continue the training needed to become a qualified emergency medicine specialist. Additional elective and track time is provided for further pursuit of clinical or research interests, which lay the foundation for the fourth-year track time. As a third-year resident, you train as an on-shift resuscitation team leader.

The final year of residency, also known as the “mock attending year,” is individualized based on your interests and what track you’ve chosen. You serve as a mock attending and play a more supervisory and teaching role in the department. During your fourth year, you also explore your specific niche interests in the field with extensive and dedicated track and elective time.

Pista de cuidados críticos/reanimación
The critical care track is designed to provide additional training and exposure to critical care resuscitation and ICU patient management. This covers more than three months of rotations over the third and fourth years of residency, under the preceptorship of both emergency and critical care-trained attendings.

Medicina de emergencia social global y local
The purpose of this track is to provide more extensive experience and education in the role emergency medicine physicians can play in the promoting health equity and the eliminating health disparities. You gain an increased understanding of and appreciation for the nascent field of social emergency medicine. You also learn how social determinants of health impact public health and emergency medicine, both at home and abroad.

Servicios médicos de urgencia (EMS)/Medicina de desastres
This subspecialty encompasses the required training and knowledge necessary to provide medical oversight and directorship in a variety of prehospital environments, including EMS, disaster, event medicine and tactical operations. You receive the training required to assume leadership roles in EMS. You also receive medical oversight of prehospital care specialty training, so you can become a competitive EMS fellowship applicant and graduate prepared to lead in EMS medical oversight.

Educación médica
This track is an area of interest for emergency medicine residents who want to pursue careers in academics. The focus is to provide niche development through specialized training, as well as the study, practice and honing of education skills as well as specialized skills for academic leadership during residency so you’re better prepared for your future career.

Ultrasonido
This track provides senior residents with advanced training in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) through working with the SBH ONMM inpatient team. In this track, you work closely with ONMM attendings to perform inpatient consults, newborn examinations and outpatient clinical visits. Prior osteopathy training is not a requirement. Also, if you’re an allopathic graduate, you may complete prerequisite osteopathic coursework to qualify as a candidate for this track.

Medicina osteopática y manipulativa

I am excited you are considering an emergency medicine rotation at SBH.

As someone who did my residency here, and who has worked here for more than 25 years, I know you will receive an exceptional education experience at SBH Health System. We serve a diverse population, and you will have countless opportunities to be involved in the care of patients with wide-ranging disease states.

The department continues to grow and expand academically, with sections for ultrasound, critical care, research and simulation medicine, but the four-year Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a basic pillar of the hospital. It’s been educating emergency medicine residents for more than 30 years. SBH also hosts a fourth-year elective, with more than 80 students participating each year. It’s a hands-on residency and student rotation.

Through an emergency medicine rotation, you will be involved with all the didactics provided by our residency program, including Wednesday conferences, daily educational morning reports, and weekly faculty-and-student-only sessions that focus on simulation, interactive teaching sessions and case presentations.

This is a four-week rotation for senior students pursuing an emergency medicine residency. You complete 10 shifts during this rotation. You also participate in emergency medicine residency didactics every Wednesday morning, and attend student-specific education every Wednesday afternoon. As a sub-intern, you are expected to work independently in the emergency department, seeing patients as the primary provider and working directly with the attending physician.

• This offering is open to qualified applicants from any medical school. At this time, we cannot accommodate applicants who require a U.S. visa. We offer rolling start dates each Monday based on your school calendar.

Our SEMP experience is a six-week educational experience in the field of emergency medicine that’s open to qualified U.S. medical school students from underrepresented populations. Participants attend in the summer between their MS1 and MS2 years.

If you attend the CUNY School of Medicine or NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, you may choose to fulfill your emergency medicine requirements in the Department of
Emergency Medicine at SBH. This rotation is not open to visiting students.

Our ultrasound elective is a two-week overview of point-of-care ultrasound in the emergency department. Through this elective, you join our resident ultrasound team and participate in all aspects of ultrasound training in our department. You also participate in scanning shifts in the department, as well as quality improvement and didactics. Ultrasound rotators do not participate in direct patient management.

This rotation is open to qualified applicants from any medical school. At this time, we cannot accommodate applicants who require a U.S. visa.
