The Internal Medicine Residency Program at SBH

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at SBH Health System is fully ACGME-accredited and has a long history of training extremely skilled internal medicine physicians.

We’re committed to maintaining this high level of excellence in training future generations of primary care internists, hospitalists and subspecialists.

As a resident at a safety-net hospital, you’ll experience what it’s like to be on the front lines of patient care. We offer our residents broad exposure to a range of illnesses and pathologies in diverse clinical settings, such as:

  • An active inpatient medical service run by full-time hospitalists
  • A large medical ICU staffed by full-time intensivists
  • The complete range of medical subspecialty inpatient and outpatient consultative services
  • A robust and growing comprehensive and integrated primary care service across multiple practice sites with numerous specialized programs, including:
    • Asma
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Diabetes
    • Geriatrics
    • HIV/AIDS

Thank you for your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency Program. Located in the heart of the Bronx, our program is built on the mission of serving a diverse and medically complex patient population in a safety net hospital setting. Our residents are the first-line physicians for our patients and are deeply involved in all aspects of patient care, from the emergency department to the wards to the intensive care units. This hands-on training cultivates confidence, clinical acumen, and independence from day one.

What sets our program apart is the depth and breadth of clinical exposure. Our residents care for patients with advanced and multifaceted medical conditions that require nuanced decision-making and compassionate care. As a result, our graduates are exceptionally well-prepared to enter any clinical environment, and they are highly sought after for their ability to care for complex patients with ease and professionalism.

Approximately one-third of our graduates choose to pursue careers as hospitalists, and another third as primary care physicians, where they continue to serve on the front lines of patient care. The remaining one third choose to match into competitive fellowship programs across the country. Our alumni have successfully pursued fellowships in Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Palliative Care, Pulmonary and Critical Care, and Rheumatology.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at SBH is an ACGME-accredited, three-year training program that provides you with the opportunity to learn from hands-on experience caring for patients in the Bronx.

Curriculum, Requirements, and Benefits

Our program offers the following residency block schedule:

PGY1

  • 5 blocks of general medicine inpatient service
  • 3 blocks of ambulatory clinic
  • 2 blocks of ICU
  • 1 block of admitting/neurology
  • 1 block of general medicine inpatient service (night float)
  • 1 block of vacation

PGY2

  • 2 blocks of general medicine inpatient service (floors)
  • 1 block of ambulatory clinic
  • 1 block of geriatrics inpatient/nephrology
  • 1 block of palliative/geriatrics outpatient
  • 1 block of ICU
  • 1 block of night float
  • 1 block of back-up team
  • 1 block of emergency medicine
  • 1 block of endocrinology/rheumatology
  • 1 block of infectious diseases or hematology/oncology
  • 1 block of elective
  • 1 block of vacation

PGY3

  • 2 blocks of general medicine inpatient service
  • 2 blocks of ambulatory clinic

Some highlights of our clinical curriculum include:

  • Simulation laboratory: We recently opened a $2 million, grant-funded simulation lab where you can use mannequin-based simulators during clinical scenarios to learn and practice procedures and
    running codes.
  • Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS): We incorporated POCUS into the curriculum so you can learn essential diagnostic and procedural skills at the bedside. You’ll learn to rapidly assess and diagnose conditions such as cardiac dysfunction, pleural effusions and deep vein thrombosis, enhancing your
    clinical decision-making and patient care skills. You’ll also participate in hands-on workshops, bedside teaching, and regular image review sessions to ensure proficiency, while also engaging in didactic sessions and case reviews to reinforce theoretical knowledge. With this training, you’ll be prepared to effectively integrate POCUS into daily practice, improving patient outcomes and fostering a culture of continuous learning and quality improvement.
  • Primary Care Track: The primary care track is designed for residents who plan to practice primary care. As a PGY 2 or PGY 3 resident, you’re given the option to do more rotations in primary care
    (instead of ICU rotations), have additional teaching opportunities in the primary care setting, and be
    involved in quality improvement projects pertaining to primary care. This track grants the same
    degree as the conventional internal medicine residency.
  • Nutrition Component: As a resident of SBH Health System, you have access to a fully staffed
    teaching kitchen, along with a chef and nutritionist. You can use the kitchen to cook and help with
    teaching classes for community members.
  • Research Opportunities: We support residents interested in working on research. Our senior residents, for example, support other residents by offering conferences and specialized journal clubs such as cardiology, pulmonary and endocrinology. As a result, you have the opportunity to publish
    case reports, observational and retrospective studies and, on occasion, prospective studies. If your work is accepted at a medical conference, you’re encouraged to attend and present your work. Find

Didactic curriculum
Our didactic curriculum includes:

  • Morning reports (monthly, interactive, case-based learning)
  • Grand rounds (every Thursday morning)
  • Weekly morning conferences (a series on primary care topics, pulmonary and critical care curricula, presentations by subspecialty faculty members and by pharmacy and culinary department faculty members)
  • Morbidity and mortality conferences (monthly case presentations and discussions)
  • Journal club (monthly current literature evaluations)
  • Afternoon conferences (daily meetings for inpatient unit residents)
  • Board review sessions (monthly exam and board preparation practice)

We offer 30 positions for PGY 1 residents. We do not offer preliminary positions. We also don’t offer any observership or research positions.

While we evaluate each candidate as a whole, we prefer you meet the following criteria:

  • USMLE Step 1 – pass
  • USMLE Step 2 – 245 or above on the first attempt
  • USMLE Step 3 – pass before residency begins
  • Have a valid ECFMG certificate
  • Have graduated within 10 years of applying for residency
    Along with your application, we also require the submission of:

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement
  • A letter from the dean
  • USMLE scores

Our residency program benefits include:

  • 20 days of paid vacation per year
  • Sick leave accrual (one day per month the first year, then 12 days per year)

  • Salary commensurate with postgraduate year

All conditions of employment, including compensation and benefits, are negotiated with the Committee of Interns and Residents SEIU, which represents all interns, residents and fellows.

We have rolling admissions, with all of our positions offered outside the match. Interviews are held each October.
