Our bariatric servicesWe believe bariatric surgery should be part of a lifelong health transformation. A transformation that’s about more than just your physical health, but about your emotional and mental health, too. That’s why many of our services are dedicated to supporting you on your health journey — both before and after your surgery.
Whether we’re connecting you with support groups, checking in with you on your nutrition and exercise goals, or counseling you on how weight loss can help with health conditions like diabetes and sleep apnea, our team of compassionate caregivers is committed to helping you succeed.
Initial consultationIf you’ve been referred to us by a primary care doctor, our first goal is to make you as comfortable as possible and answer all your questions. We’ll schedule a 30-minute consultation with you so you can get to know us — and so we can get to know you.Initial consultationAt your initial consultation, you’ll meet with one of our bariatric surgeons, who will answer your questions, provide you with information and resources, and let you know your options. We’ll also review your medical history and perform a physical exam to make sure you’re a candidate for weight-loss surgery.
If we believe surgery is right for you, we’ll help you understand what’s involved with bariatric surgery at SBH Health System, such as consultations with nutrition and lung specialists, and how we’ll support you through the entire journey. In addition, we’ll explain how the insurance approval process will work.
In-depth clearance processWeight-loss surgery isn’t for everyone. You’ll meet with various specialists on our team to make sure it’s right for you.In-depth clearance processBecause we understand that bariatric surgery is about so much more than calories and pounds, we require you to meet with several specialists and undergo certain tests before you can have surgery. Typically, that involves meetings with nutrition, psychiatry, cardiology, pulmonary and gastroenterology experts.
These doctors may perform:
- Lung and sleep studies
- Heart function tests
- Procedures to look at your esophagus, stomach and upper intestine
- Mental health evaluations
- Diet consultations
The two procedures we perform for weight loss are:
Gastric bypass surgery, or “roux-en-y” gastric bypass
Our bariatric surgeon will close off part of the stomach, leaving only a small pouch for food. We’ll then form a new connection between the new stomach pouch and the small intestine. This type of surgery leads to the most weight loss and works the fastest, but it’s also the most serious surgery and may cause problems with how your body absorbs nutrients, meaning you may need to take supplemental vitamins for the rest of your life.
Gastric sleeve surgery, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy
Our surgeon will remove part of your stomach, leaving behind a narrow stomach shaped like a banana. This type of surgery is a less invasive surgery than gastric bypass. It’s also less likely to cause problems with how you absorb nutrients.
Two-year follow-up supportA healthy lifestyle is lifelong. That’s why we follow weight-loss surgery with two years of regular check-ins and support.Two-year follow-up supportWe don’t believe that weight-loss surgery is just one procedure. Instead, we believe in forming a relationship with you and helping you continue in your health journey. That’s why we’ll schedule regular follow-up appointments with you for the first two years after your surgery — to make sure you’re doing well and keeping up with your nutrition and exercise goals.
Also, both during and after your surgery, you’ll be able to join patient support groups. In fact, we encourage it. And you can take advantage of the programs we offer at our SBH Health and Wellness Center to help support your healthy lifestyle.
Other surgeries and minimally invasive proceduresBecause we’re a full-service bariatric department, we perform procedures other than weight-loss surgeries, including hiatal hernia repairs and bowel obstruction. We also offer revisional surgical weight-loss procedures.Other surgeries and minimally invasive proceduresWe provide a full service of offerings to patients. If you’ve had bariatric surgery at another hospital and are looking for a correction procedure, we can help. We also perform procedures other than weight-loss surgeries, including:
- Appendectomy (appendix removal
- Bowel obstruction
- Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
- Hernia repair (inguinal/femoral, umbilical and ventral)
- Hiatal hernia repair/anti-reflux
- Soft tissue mass excisions
- Solid organ (adrenal, spleen and pancreas)
The SBH Wound Care Center multidisciplinary team delivers a comprehensive approach to managing chronic wound issues. This initiative is a collaborative effort between SBH Health System and Restorix Health, a leading national wound management organization.
Wound Care Services at SBHOur team includes physicians with advanced expertise in Vascular and Podiatric Surgery, Wound Management, and Hyperbaric Medicine, alongside nurses who specialize in chronic wound care.
Given the high rates of diabetes in the local community, which often lead to slow and non-healing wounds, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a crucial part of the Center’s patient care services.
Advanced treatment for complex wounds and hyperbaric oxygen therapy We treat a range of complex wound types at our center. This includes venous stasis ulcers and diabetic foot wounds, which often result from poor circulation and diabetes, leading to slow or non-healing sores.Advanced treatment for complex wounds and hyperbaric oxygen therapyAdditionally, our services cover more intricate conditions such as osteomyelitis (bone infections), radiation injuries/necrosis, and necrotizing infections, which can be challenging to manage and require specialized care.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) plays a crucial role in our treatment approach. It involves the use of 100 percent pressurized oxygen to enhance the body’s natural healing processes. During a typical 90-minute session, patients are placed inside a transparent tube where they breathe the concentrated oxygen. This therapy is not only safe and painless but also highly effective in treating non-healing wounds by improving oxygen delivery to the affected tissues. Our patients are carefully monitored throughout their sessions by our skilled technicians to ensure optimal results.
Additional servicesOur advanced diagnostic tools enable precise assessment and management of diverse wound conditions.Additional servicesLeveraging our specialized skills in diabetic foot reconstruction, we deliver effective care for individuals experiencing severe complications from diabetes.
Additionally, we incorporate bioengineered skin substitutes for graft applications and apply aggressive medical and surgical interventions for complex cases.
Compression therapy is a crucial part of our treatment strategy, particularly for managing venous stasis ulcers. Together, these services form a comprehensive approach, allowing us to deliver targeted and effective care for a variety of wound issues.

Vascular disease includes disorders of the arteries, veins, and lymph vessels, as well as blood disorders that affect circulation. Many people with potentially serious vascular disease may not show symptoms, making vascular screenings crucial for early detection before harm occurs.
Diagnostic servicesVascular diagnostic services play a crucial role in identifying serious vascular conditions before they lead to significant complications.Diagnostic servicesThese screenings are typically painless and noninvasive, using advanced technologies to detect potential problems in the circulatory system. Common diagnostic tests include ultrasound examinations, which provide detailed images of blood flow and vessel structure, and Doppler pressure studies, which measure blood flow and detect blockages. Early detection through these tests can identify conditions such as carotid artery disease, which may lead to stroke, or leg artery blockages that could result in limb loss.
These diagnostic services are vital because many individuals with vascular disease may not exhibit symptoms until the condition has progressed significantly. By utilizing vascular screenings, healthcare providers can uncover hidden issues and initiate early intervention strategies to manage or prevent serious health problems. This proactive approach helps in mitigating risks and improving overall outcomes for patients at risk of vascular disease.
Medical treatmentMedical treatment for vascular disease focuses on managing risk factors and preventing disease progression.Medical treatmentKey aspects of this treatment include controlling high cholesterol, managing blood pressure, and addressing conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Lifestyle modifications, such as quitting smoking, increasing physical activity, and adopting a heart-healthy diet, are crucial in reducing the impact of vascular disease. Medications may also be prescribed to help control cholesterol levels, reduce blood clotting, and improve overall vascular health.
Effective management of these risk factors is essential for maintaining vascular health and preventing serious complications. By addressing these factors, medical treatment aims to slow the progression of atherosclerosis and other vascular conditions, thus reducing the risk of events such as strokes or heart attacks. Regular monitoring and adherence to treatment plans are vital in achieving long-term health benefits and improving quality of life for individuals with vascular disease.
Surgical treatmentSurgical treatment for vascular disease focuses on repairing damaged blood vessels and restoring normal blood flow to prevent severe complications.Surgical treatmentCommon procedures include aneurysm repair, where surgeons correct weakened or bulging areas of arteries to prevent rupture, and endarterectomy, which removes plaque buildup from arteries to alleviate blockages. These interventions are crucial in reducing the risk of stroke, preventing limb loss, and addressing severe claudication caused by restricted blood flow.
In addition to repairing damaged vessels, surgical treatments may involve creating alternative pathways for blood flow around blocked arteries, or angioplasty and stenting, which open narrowed arteries and maintain the openness of the arteries . These procedures aim to improve circulation, relieve symptoms, and enhance the overall quality of life for patients. By addressing severe vascular issues through surgery, healthcare providers can effectively manage and mitigate the risks associated with advanced vascular disease.

At SBH Health System, we have decades of experience with both common and complex urologic conditions. And a deep knowledge of the community where we live and work, and where many of us were medically trained. That means we provide advanced care that’s tailored to you. In a community hospital setting that’s both comfortable and convenient.
Whether you have kidney stones, trouble emptying your bladder or are dealing with erectile dysfunction, we’re committed to helping you get the best care possible, as quickly as possible.
Our urologic servicesOur urologic team is here to help you find answers. We’re experts at treating common prostate conditions, like prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate (called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). And at treating all conditions affecting the urinary tract, including urinary incontinence in both men and women.
For women with urinary incontinence, we offer a wide range of treatment options, including behavioral techniques, pelvic floor muscle exercises, medications, electrical stimulation, medical device inserts, interventional therapies and several surgical procedures.
Conditions we treatWe can help you with any health problem related to the urinary tract in both men and women.Conditions we treatWe can diagnose and treat urinary tract health conditions including:
- Cancer, including bladder, kidney and testicular
- Erectile dysfunction
- Kidney stones
- Male and female incontinence
- Obstruction from prostate enlargement
- Pelvic floor disorders
- Prostate issues
We use tests like ultrasounds and biopsies to diagnose these conditions, as well as surgical procedures to treat them. These procedures include:
- Artificial urinary sphincter (an implanted device to treat stress urinary incontinence)
- Circumcision
- Cystoscopy (a procedure to view the inside of your bladder and urethra)
- Enlarged prostate management
- Hernia repair
- Sling (a surgical option to treat urinary incontinence)
- Urethral repair
- Varicocelectomy (a surgical procedure to treat enlarged veins in the scrotum)
- Vasectomy
Some cases of kidney stones, urinary stones and other conditions affecting the urinary tract may get better with lifestyle changes and medications. But our urology team includes subspecialists in endourology who are highly skilled in using minimally invasive procedures to treat these diseases. We’ll tailor your treatment to your individual diagnosis, needs and preferences.
We may recommend tunnel surgery to remove the stone. Or we may recommend nonsurgical treatments like extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), which uses sound waves, or laser energy, to break up complex kidney stones.
BPH programAt SBH, you can receive minimally invasive treatments for BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate) in an outpatient setting.BPH programWhen the prostate is enlarged, it can block the bladder. If you experience signs of BPH — like needing to pass urine often and a weak urine flow — and are diagnosed with the condition, we’ll likely first try medications to reduce your symptoms.
If medicines aren’t working for you, though, you may qualify for a minimally invasive treatment for BPH in an outpatient setting through our dedicated program. These treatments may include prostatic urethral lift (PUL), which uses implants to lift and compress the prostate so it no longer blocks the urethra, and prostate artery embolization (PAE), which uses radiation to block blood flow to the prostate and try to shrink the gland.
Urologic cancersWe diagnose and treat urologic cancers including prostate cancer and bladder cancer.Urologic cancersWe use advanced diagnostic tools and treatments, including robotic surgery, to care for cancers like bladder, kidney, prostate, testicular and penile cancers. Bladder and kidney cancers can develop in both men and women, while prostate, testicular and penile cancers are specific to men.
If you’re diagnosed with a urologic cancer, we’ll plan your treatment based on several factors, like the specific diagnosis, how advanced the cancer is and your personal preferences. Common treatment options for urologic cancers include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. We also may recommend immunotherapy, which uses the immune system to fight disease.
Erectile dysfunction and men’s sexual healthOur providers specialize in treating erectile dysfunction and other issues related to men’s sexual health.Erectile dysfunction and men’s sexual healthWe’re here to help men experiencing erectile dysfunction and other issues related to sexual health. We’ll work to determine the cause and recommend the best treatment, which will be based on your age and overall health, the severity of the condition and your treatment goals. Medical therapies may include prescription medications. We also may recommend hormone replacement therapy or penile implants.
Although erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual health issue in men, we can also help with others, including premature ejaculation and an inability to reach orgasm.

Spine care services at SBHWhether from a congenital issue, worsening condition, or injury, you need expert help. Our spine care specialists provide a comprehensive approach to relieve pain and restore normal activities. We diagnose and treat both acute and chronic back and neck pain for patients of all ages, from athletes to seniors.
Targeted treatments address the root causes of spinal issues, such as disc herniations or misalignments, improving mobility and reducing discomfort.
Diagnostic servicesOur diagnostic services begin with a comprehensive evaluation to accurately identify the source of your spinal issues. Diagnostic servicesWe utilize advanced imaging technologies, such as MRI and CT scans, to gain a detailed view of your spine’s condition. These diagnostic tools help us detect a range of disorders, from low back pain and neck pain to more complex conditions like spinal stenosis and herniated disks. By combining these imaging results with a thorough clinical assessment, we ensure that we pinpoint the exact nature of your problem, allowing for a more targeted and effective treatment plan.
Additionally, our diagnostic approach includes a detailed patient history and physical examination to understand your symptoms and their impact on your daily life. We consider factors such as congenital spine disorders, degenerative spine disease, and any previous injuries or conditions. This comprehensive evaluation enables us to diagnose not only the visible issues but also any underlying factors contributing to your condition. With this information, we can provide a precise diagnosis and develop a tailored treatment strategy that addresses both the symptoms and the root causes of your spine-related issues.
Medical treatmentOur medical treatment approach focuses on providing non-surgical interventions to alleviate pain and restore function.Medical treatmentWe start with conservative methods, including prescription medications and over-the-counter pain relievers, to manage symptoms effectively. For more targeted relief, we use injections such as corticosteroids or nerve blocks to reduce inflammation and pain. In addition, we offer specialized exercise programs designed to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, improve flexibility, and enhance overall physical function. Our physical and occupational therapy services further support recovery by helping you develop skills to manage daily activities and prevent future issues.
Beyond these methods, our medical treatment includes stress management techniques to address the impact of chronic pain on your mental and emotional well-being. We use evidence-based modalities, such as advanced physical therapy techniques and integrative therapies, to complement traditional treatments and optimize outcomes. By incorporating a multidisciplinary approach, we ensure that each aspect of your condition is addressed, enhancing your overall quality of life and promoting long-term health and well-being.
Surgical treatmentWhen surgical intervention is necessary, we prioritize minimally invasive techniques that offer significant benefits over traditional surgery. Surgical treatmentOur approach uses state-of-the-art technologies and methods designed to reduce the impact on your body. Minimally invasive procedures, such as endoscopic spine surgery and microdiscectomy, involve smaller incisions, which result in less scarring, reduced pain, and minimal blood loss. These advanced techniques allow for quicker recovery times and a faster return to daily activities, making the surgical experience as smooth and efficient as possible.
Our surgical treatments are carefully tailored to address specific conditions, including spinal stenosis, herniated disks, and degenerative spine disease. We employ motion-preserving procedures that aim to maintain or improve spinal function while alleviating symptoms. Alarmingly, only about 3% of smokers are able to quit successfully without support.
Smoking cessation services at SBHThe impact of smoking is severe, with more than 1,200 individuals succumbing to smoking-related diseases each day. This staggering number positions smoking as the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality across the nation.
SBH runs a smoking cessation program that uses a combination of medications and supportive measures to help people quit smoking. This includes science-based treatments to minimize patients’ nicotine withdrawal symptoms and maximize their success in achieving either a smoking reduction or total cessation.
Education (Group Session)In our group sessions, we focus on the critical aspects of smoking cessation, beginning with the risks associated with tobacco use and the extensive benefits of quitting.Education (Group Session)Participants will learn about the science behind nicotine addiction, including how nicotine affects the brain and perpetuates the cycle of dependence. We also explore the role of behavioral change in achieving and maintaining abstinence, emphasizing how understanding and addressing triggers can significantly impact success rates.
Our sessions provide practical strategies for successful behavioral change, equipping individuals with tools to manage cravings and establish healthier habits. Additionally, we cover cessation medications—how they work, their benefits, and their limitations—to ensure participants are well-informed about their options and can make empowered decisions about their quit journey.
Quit Plan (Individual One-on-One Session)During individual sessions, we work closely with each patient to develop a personalized quit plan tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.Quit Plan (Individual One-on-One Session)This collaborative approach involves setting a specific quit date and outlining actionable steps to achieve that goal. We discuss various strategies to prepare for the quit date, including identifying personal triggers and establishing coping mechanisms.
If appropriate, we prescribe cessation medications to support the patient’s efforts and increase the likelihood of success. Additionally, we schedule follow-up appointments to monitor progress, address any challenges, and make necessary adjustments to the quit plan. This ongoing support helps ensure that patients remain on track and receive the guidance needed for a successful cessation journey.

Rheumatology services at SBHOur team of highly-trained rheumatology experts provides comprehensive care for these and related conditions, including everything from screening and diagnosis to advanced treatment options.
Screening and DiagnosisEffective management of rheumatological conditions begins with precise screening and diagnosis.Screening and DiagnosisThis involves a combination of blood tests to identify markers of inflammation and autoantibodies, imaging studies such as X-rays and MRIs to evaluate joint damage and inflammation, and joint aspiration to analyze fluid for signs of infection or crystals.
Additional diagnostic tools like biopsies and genetic testing may be employed to confirm specific conditions and tailor an appropriate treatment plan.
Advanced treatment optionsTo manage complex rheumatological conditions effectively, a range of advanced treatment options is available.Advanced treatment optionsDisease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) and biologics play a crucial role in controlling disease progression and inflammation. DMARDs, such as methotrexate and sulfasalazine, help slow the disease and prevent joint damage. Biologics, including TNF inhibitors and IL-6 inhibitors, target specific immune system components to reduce severe inflammation and improve symptoms.
Additionally, targeted synthetic DMARDs, such as JAK inhibitors, offer a more focused approach to managing disease activity by blocking specific inflammatory pathways. Corticosteroids provide rapid relief from acute inflammation, while physical and occupational therapies support joint function and daily living activities. For persistent issues, joint injections and surgical interventions, such as arthroscopy or joint replacement, may be considered to alleviate pain and restore joint function. These treatments are tailored to each patient’s needs, aiming to improve overall quality of life and manage the complexities of rheumatic diseases.

We provide specialized services for conditions like sleep-related breathing disorders and lung infections, ensuring top-quality care tailored to our community needs.
Get a Referral/referrals/Pulmonary services at SBHWe have strategically integrated our department with critical care services to enhance the management of these prevalent conditions. This integration allows us to deliver more coordinated and effective care, ensuring that our patients receive comprehensive support throughout their treatment journey.
By structuring our services around the specific needs of our patients, we aim to promote early recovery, prevent hospital re-admissions, and significantly improve their overall quality of life.
Pulmonary services Our pulmonary clinic operates with dedicated sessions to ensure comprehensive care for our patients. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we focus on regular pulmonary and asthma clinic visits. Pulmonary ServicesThese sessions, available both in the morning and afternoon, are conducted face-to-face and by phone, catering to a variety of conditions including COPD, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and pulmonary hypertension (pHTN). Our goal is to provide personalized care and effective management for each patient, addressing their specific pulmonary needs.
Asthma immunological therapyOn Tuesdays and Thursdays, we concentrate on advanced immunologic therapies for patients with severe persistent asthma. Asthma Immunological TherapyOur clinic administers Xolair and Nucala, immunologic subcutaneous injections given every 2 to 4 weeks, to help manage these challenging cases. With 100 to 150 patients regularly attending these sessions, we are committed to offering cutting-edge treatments.
Additionally, we are in the process of applying for Fasenra, a new immunologic therapy, to further enhance our treatment options and support our patients’ asthma management.
Lung cancer screeningOur Lung Cancer Screening Program operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, providing critical early detection and diagnostic services for lung cancer.Lung cancer screeningPatients who meet the criteria for further investigation benefit from advanced procedures, including EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) and IR-guided biopsies, conducted within four weeks at our center.
Our diagnostic yield, ranging from 60% to 80%, is on par with other leading centers, reflecting the effectiveness of our screening process.
Pulmonary function testsTo ensure the safest possible environment for our patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, we've implemented top-notch safety measures for pulmonary function tests (PFT).Pulmonary function testsWe have three specialized rooms designed to keep any potential virus from spreading, with one room used specifically for these tests.
Before a PFT is performed, patients are tested for COVID-19, and our respiratory therapists wear special protective gear called a PAPR (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator) to keep both themselves and the patients safe. The other two rooms are used for general pulmonary outpatient visits.
Advanced Diagnostic TestsOur ancillary tests provide essential insights into lung health and help diagnose various conditions.Advanced Diagnostic TestsEBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound) uses a specialized ultrasound device inserted into the lungs to capture detailed images, which aids in identifying abnormalities and guiding further treatment.
Bronchoscopy involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the airways to directly view the inside of the lungs. This procedure allows us to examine the lungs closely and take samples for testing if necessary.
Thoracentesis is another key test that involves removing excess fluid from around the lungs using a needle. This procedure can help diagnose the cause of fluid buildup and relieve pressure on the lungs, improving breathing comfort.
Together, these tests offer a comprehensive approach to understanding and treating lung conditions, ensuring we provide the best possible care for our patients.

We provide a range of services for mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders, with care from skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health professionals tailored to each patient’s needs.
Get a Referral/referrals/Mental health services at SBHThe Department of Psychiatry at SBH offers a wide range of clinical services to children, adults and geriatric patients. Our priorities include providing the highest quality of care for individuals and families who seek clinical care.
Many services for our patients are provided by SBH Behavioral Health (SBHBH), our affiliated comprehensive mental health outpatient program.
Adult Inpatient ServicesThe Adult Inpatient Service is comprised of two designated units with a total of 49 beds. The staffing of this service includes four full-time psychiatrists, two full-time clinical psychologists, one full-time physician assistant, three full-time social workers, three full-time activity therapists and a complement of nursing staff.Adult Inpatient ServicesUpon admission to the Psychiatric Service, each patient is assigned a treatment team consisting of a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, primary nurse, and activity therapist. This team oversees every aspect of patient care and, in collaboration with the patient themselves, assumes responsibility for developing an individualized treatment plan. The plan is formally reviewed and revised as goals are met.
A psychiatrist evaluates all patients and prescribes medication. All patients are evaluated medically and any medical issues are addressed.
Patients are also provided with group and milieu therapies. Groups typically focus on helping patients cope with their illness, and assisting them in reducing their potential for relapse. Patients may receive individual psychotherapy as appropriate.
The discharge planning process is an important aspect of treatment, and is begun as soon as a patient is admitted to the psychiatric service. We involve each discipline in this process. The primary goal of discharge planning is the development of a safe and appropriate discharge plan that maximizes the individual’s ability to function as independently as possible in the community and reduce the patient’s potential for relapse. This goal is accomplished by ensuring that each patient is referred for appropriate follow-up and aftercare services to help them cope with their illness and life stressors. For many of our patients, these services are provided by SBH Behavioral Health.
Consultation-Liaison ServiceThe Consultation-Liaison Service at our hospital provides specialized psychiatric evaluations for patients admitted to various clinical services, including medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and more. Consultation-Liaison ServiceThis service ensures comprehensive mental health assessments across all areas of care, helping to address psychiatric needs as part of the overall treatment plan. Additionally, the service supports patients in the Emergency Department, which handles a combined census of 100,000 visits per year, through dedicated psychiatric evaluation and management.
Within the Emergency Department, there is a designated suite, ED 3, specifically for the evaluation and management of psychiatric patients. This facility is equipped with a private office and an interview room, allowing for focused and confidential assessments. By offering these dedicated resources, the Consultation-Liaison Service enhances the quality of care for patients requiring psychiatric support in acute and emergency settings.
Adult Outpatient Clinic (AOC)Our programs are dedicated to delivering comprehensive and culturally sensitive mental health services to adults. Adult Outpatient Clinic (AOC)We offer a range of therapeutic interventions including individual, group, and family psychotherapy, as well as psychopharmacological services for adults aged 18 and older. The team providing these services includes licensed social workers, mental health workers, nurses, and psychiatrists, all committed to delivering high-quality care. Under the leadership of Milagros Arce-Tomala, LCSW-R, and Clinical Supervisor Dahlia Wareham, LCSW-R, our programs strive to address a wide variety of conditions, including:
- Anger issues
- Anxiety
- At-risk behaviors
- Bereavement
- Depression
- Domestic violence
- Family conflicts
- Hyperactivity
- Marital difficulties
- Mood disorders
- Poor socialization skills
- Schizophrenia
- Substance abuse
These services are available for individuals aged 5 to 21 and their families, addressing a wide range of emotional and psychological needs. Our programs are designed to support children and adolescents from various backgrounds, including those attending local schools such as P.S. 32 and 205.
Under the expert direction of Jenna Cooper, LCSW-R, DCCS ensures that all therapeutic interventions are delivered with the highest level of professionalism and care.
ReferralsOur Centralized Intake Program serves as a crucial entry point for referrals from hospitals, community organizations, and agencies throughout the Bronx. Referrals can be submitted via telephone, fax, or in person, providing flexible options for accessing our services.ReferralsThis centralized approach ensures that individuals in need of mental health support can connect with our programs efficiently and effectively.
Upon receiving a referral, patients undergo an initial evaluation consisting of two appointments to complete a Comprehensive Psychosocial Assessment. This thorough assessment helps determine the most appropriate course of action for each individual. Following the initial evaluation, patients are referred to one of our specialized programs where they may receive further evaluation by a psychiatrist for medication management and ongoing psychotherapy from a clinical social worker.
The treatment planning process begins after the initial evaluation, where patients collaborate with their treatment team to establish clear treatment goals. A personalized treatment plan is then developed, incorporating evidence-based psychopharmacologic care and psychotherapy to meet these goals. The Centralized Intake Program is guided by the expertise of Jenna Cooper, LCSW-R, and Shirley Rodriguez, LCSW-R, who ensure that patients receive coordinated and effective care throughout their treatment journey.

If you take care of your feet, they’ll take care of you. Our services can help. Whether you have corns and calluses, heel pain or painful arthritis, we can help you identify the source and get you back to living your life.
We care for the whole spectrum of conditions related to the feet and ankles. And we help people who suffer from a trauma injury, whether it’s due to a car crash, work accident, or a simple fall or break.
Dedicated wound centerIn our Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine, we offer comprehensive services to people with chronic wound issues.Dedicated wound centerOur podiatry team includes doctors with advanced training in vascular and podiatric surgery, wound care and hyperbaric medicine (using oxygen to speed up wound healing), as well as nurses skilled in treating chronic wounds.
Some of the chronic wound issues we treat include:
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency (a medical emergency caused by reduced blood flow in the arteries)
- Chronic bone infections
- Crush injuries
- Diabetic foot and leg ulcers
- Venous statis ulcers (wounds that take a long time to heal due to circulation problems in the leg veins)
People with diabetes have an increased risk for foot damage due to peripheral vascular disease. There’s also a greater chance of nerve damage, which can lead to symptoms like tingling and numbness, and even gangrene (death of body tissue due to lack of blood flow or infection). Our goal is to help control your diabetes as part of your larger care team and reduce the risk of amputation as much as possible.
We focus on preventive care in our diabetic podiatry clinic, including diagnosing diabetic complications early and providing regular foot screenings. Complications we help identify and address include neuropathy (nerve damage), arthropathy (joint damage) and vasculopathy (blood vessel damage).
Care for caregiversWomen between the ages of 25 and 45 are often caregivers for both their children and their parents, making them more likely to neglect care for themselves. But they’re also the most likely group to suffer from bunions and hammer toes.Care for caregiversWe can help you treat these conditions through medicine, custom orthotics (shoe inserts) and surgery, if necessary. We may recommend, for example, anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections to reduce pain and inflammation, or shoe inserts to control foot function, reduce symptoms and prevent the condition from worsening. If you need surgery, we have several options for you, which we’ll discuss with you to make sure the treatment best fits your life and goals.
We also may recommend things like wearing shoes that aren’t as tight and avoiding high-heeled shoes, or applying an over-the-counter pad to the area.
Skin careWe diagnose and treat a variety of skin problems on the feet and ankles to give you relief from pain and discomfort.Skin careOur podiatrists treat skin conditions like fungal toenails and athlete’s foot, as well as squamous cell carcinoma (a common skin cancer) and melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer). We use medicine to treat fungi in the foot or bacterial infections, perform skin biopsies and sometimes surgical treatments, like excisions and removals. We also may perform nail removals and reconstruction of the nail and nail bed, sometimes in the operating room depending on how severe the case is.
In addition, our team treats conditions like psoriasis (an autoimmune disease that affects the skin), warts and hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating of the feet.
Pediatric careAt SBH Health System, we’re fully equipped to treat pediatric patients. That means we can help children with any issue related to the foot or ankle.Pediatric careOur specialists are highly trained in diagnosing and treating pediatric patients — whether it’s a child born with a foot deformity, like an extra toe or club feet, or a child who suffers from particularly sweaty or smelly feet, a condition called hyperhidrosis that affects young adults more than older adults.
Some of the common pediatric foot disorders we treat include:
- Achilles tendinitis
- Bunions
- Clubfoot
- Duck feet (out-toeing; when a child’s feet point outward)
- Flat feet
- Foot fractures
- Hammer toes
- Heel pain
- Ingrown toenails
- Iselin disease (a condition that affects the long bone connecting the outside of the foot to the little toe)
- Pigeon toes (in-toeing; when a child’s feet point inward)
- Polydactyly (a congenital condition that causes an extra toe to grow)
- Sever’s disease (a common cause of heel pain in growing children)
