Dear Incoming Pediatric Dental Resident,

Welcome to the SBH Health System Pediatric Dental Residency Program!

We are excited to welcome you to the next exciting chapter of your professional journey. You have joined a team of compassionate, dedicated, and skilled individuals truly committed to delivering exemplary oral health care to children, adolescents, and individuals with developmental disabilities in the Bronx and surrounding communities.

The SBH pediatric dental residency program began in 1995 and is designed to offer residents a comprehensive clinical and academic experience. Over the next two years here at SBH, you will be immersed in a wide spectrum of pediatric dental care, from preventive and restorative dentistry to the management of medically complex and special needs patients. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team and contribute meaningfully to patient management. You will learn different philosophies and approaches from our diverse team of calibrated attendings.

We are proud of our supportive learning environment, where residents are encouraged to ask questions, challenge themselves, and grow as both clinicians and leaders. Our faculty is committed to mentoring and guiding you as you hone your diagnostic and technical pediatric dental skills, deepen your knowledge base, and develop the confidence and competence to practice independently.

We understand that starting residency can be both exciting and overwhelming. Please know that we are here to support you every step of the way. Orientation activities, mentor pairings, and scheduled check-ins will help ease your transition and foster strong connections within our team.

Once again, welcome to the SBH family. We look forward to working with you and watching you thrive as a pediatric dental professional here at the hospital, and into your career beyond.

Sincerely,

Paul K. Chu, DDS
Residency Program Director, Pediatric Dentistry
Rebekah Tannen, DDS Section Chief

Overview, Curriculum, Requirements, and Benefits

A core component of the two-year Pediatric Dental Residency Program at SBH is practice management. As an attending, in addition to performing your hospital responsibilities, you’ll be actively involved in delivering pediatric dental care in private practice. Combined with in-depth preparation for the board examination, this approach fosters a truly comprehensive residency experience.
