During hemodialysis, a small amount of blood flows through a special filter, which cleanses it before returning it to the body. This process helps manage blood pressure and maintains the proper balance of essential chemicals, such as potassium and sodium.

The Liver Clinic at St. Barnabas Hospital has been helping people with liver problems for over 15 years. Many of our patients have Hepatitis C, and we are here to provide the care and support they need.

Hepatitis C is a liver disease that spreads through contact with infected blood. You can get it from sharing needles, blood transfusions before 1991, or if you were born between 1945 and 1965. About 3.5 million people in the U.S. have Hepatitis C, but many don’t know they have it. If you were born between 1945 and 1965, doctors recommend getting a one-time blood test for Hepatitis C. People with HIV should also get tested since they can have both diseases.

Hepatitis C can damage your liver slowly over many years. It can cause scarring, called cirrhosis, and can lead to liver cancer or the need for a liver transplant. Every year, about 25,000 people in the U.S. die from liver cancer, and most of them didn’t know they had Hepatitis C because it often has no symptoms.

Recent advances in medication success rates can now cure up to 97 percent of patients who are treated. The medication is no longer an injection; it is in pill form and the side effects are minimal when compared to treatments available only a couple of years ago. Treatment can now cure this disease.

To protect your liver, ask your doctor about getting tested for Hepatitis C. You should also avoid drinking alcohol, keep a healthy weight, and get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B. These simple steps can help keep your liver healthy.

At SBH, palliative care is focused on providing comfort and support to patients dealing with serious illnesses, no matter their stage of the disease. It helps manage symptoms like pain or nausea and offers emotional and practical support to improve quality of life. We provide this care alongside curative treatments.

Hospice care is a specific form of palliative care for those who are nearing the end of their life and have stopped seeking treatments aimed at curing their illness. We focuses on making patients as comfortable as possible and providing support for their families. Our hospice care is intended to ensure the best quality of life during the final stages of life, offering support in a compassionate and comforting environment.

Our hospice unit provides short-term care, with an average length of stay of between seven and 14 days. Many of these patients were previously at an acute care hospital or nursing home, or need to be stabilized before returning home for in-home hospice care.

Included are both private and semi-private rooms, as well as beautifully appointed family and meditation lounges and a family kitchen and dining area. Families can spend time with their loved ones in a warm, comfortable home-like setting 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our board certified infectious disease physicians and HIV certified physicians care for patients with a wide range of infections including but not limited to influenza, recurrent MRSA infections, HIV, Hepatitis C, travel medicine, tuberculosis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases and hospital-acquired infections.

From common illnesses like influenza and pneumonia to more complex conditions such as recurrent MRSA infections, Hepatitis C, and tuberculosis, our team is equipped to handle it all.

In addition to acute and chronic infection management, our physicians address sexually transmitted diseases and hospital-acquired infections with expertise and precision. Our HIV-certified doctors offer dedicated care for individuals living with HIV, developing personalized treatment plans and providing continuous support. Every patient in The Pathways Center for Comprehensive Care is assigned a case manager and primary HIV care physician. The case managers address any issues related to insurance, housing, social support and assisting adherence to appointments and medications.

The Center also offers educational and support groups, Hepatitis C care and referral for substance abuse care. Continuity of care is important to us. Our physicians continue to care for their patients should they be admitted to the hospital or a nursing home.

Free, confidential HIV oral rapid testing with results in 20 minutes is available in our clinics, Emergency Department, and inpatient units and rapid blood testing is available in our laboratory.

At SBH, our hematologists are medical doctors who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing blood disorders and diseases. This includes conditions such as anemia, clotting disorders, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, leukemia, lymphoma, and other cancers of the blood.

Hematologists use various tests and procedures to diagnose blood disorders accurately. They develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs, which may include medication, transfusions, chemotherapy, and stem cell transplants.

Each patient’s condition is unique, and hematologists personalize treatment plans to meet individual needs. This ensures that you receive care that is specifically tailored to your health situation.

In addition to the CBC, coagulation tests are used to assess how well your blood clots. These include tests like Prothrombin Time (PT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT), which help diagnose clotting disorders or monitor the effectiveness of blood-thinning medications. Blood smears involve examining a sample of blood under a microscope to look for any abnormalities in the shape or number of blood cells. By analyzing these test results, hematologists can pinpoint issues and develop a tailored treatment plan to address your specific needs.

During a bone marrow aspiration, a needle is inserted into the bone (usually the hip bone) to remove a small sample of the liquid part of the bone marrow. This liquid sample helps doctors look at the types and numbers of blood cells being produced.

In a bone marrow biopsy, a different needle is used to remove a small piece of solid bone marrow tissue. This provides more detailed information about the structure and health of the bone marrow. Both procedures are often done together to help diagnose or monitor blood disorders like leukemia, anemia, or other conditions affecting blood cell production. The procedures are typically performed with local anesthesia to minimize discomfort, and the samples are then examined in a lab to guide your treatment.

This procedure is often used to diagnose conditions like infections, lymphomas, or other cancers that might be affecting the lymph nodes. The biopsy is usually done with local anesthesia to numb the area, and sometimes sedation is provided to keep you comfortable. The removed tissue is then sent to a lab where it is carefully examined under a microscope. The results help your doctor understand what might be causing any swelling or other symptoms you’re experiencing and guide the next steps in your treatment.

Chemotherapy involves using powerful drugs to kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. These drugs are often given through an intravenous (IV) line, but they can also be taken in pill form. Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells, which includes cancer cells. While it can be very effective, it may also affect healthy cells, leading to side effects like fatigue, nausea, and hair loss. Your healthcare team will work with you to manage these side effects and help you stay as comfortable as possible during treatment.

Immunotherapy is a treatment that helps your body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer cells more effectively. It works by boosting the immune system or helping it target cancer cells specifically. This type of therapy might involve using substances that are naturally produced by the body or lab-made agents to enhance the immune response. Immunotherapy can offer fewer side effects than chemotherapy and is often used when other treatments are not effective. Both treatments are designed to help you fight cancer and improve your overall health, and your doctor will discuss which option is best for your specific condition.
