Internal Medicine
Healthcare organizations throughout the country are being challenged to change the way patient care is both being provided and measured in terms of value. The ability to provide integrated care, coordinated across both inpatient and outpatient settings, with special emphasis on access to primary care services and support for chronic disease management, is becomingly increasingly important. This transformation is a major shift from what much of the healthcare world is used to. Required are both a change in culture, as well as infrastructure, to best understand and foster progress towards the fulfillment of these new goals and expectations.
Our Doctors
SBH primary care physicians are available at multiple locations for general medical care and follow-up, and have extensive experience in the care of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, asthma/COPD, kidney disease and other common medical conditions. Referrals are available to all required specialists, and resources are also available to help promote health literacy, awareness and chronic disease management.
SBH hospital-based physicians (hospitalists) are available for acute or emergency medical issues requiring hospitalization and treatment. These physicians are assigned to deal with the care of patients in the hospital, and have experience with advanced medical problems related to all diseases. During your hospital stay, they will coordinate your care, communicate with your primary physician if you have one, and provide instructions for you to follow-up at the time of hospital discharge.
All faculty within the Division of General Internal Medicine are board eligible/board certified in internal medicine, and have been trained at numerous high-quality educational programs around the world. They are eligible for academic appointment at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the CUNY School of Medicine and responsible for the training of medical students, medical residents, and other medical professionals. They are also involved in areas related to quality improvement and medical scholarship, and are well published in the medical literature.
Despite the ongoing challenges in healthcare delivery in this new millennium, we are very excited for the future of healthcare in our community. While our vision and development plan is clearly a long-term one, there are many building blocks in place – namely, we are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated group of faculty hospitalists and ambulatory internists, growing infrastructural support and opportunity for collaboration with Bronx Partners for Healthy Communities within the NYS DSRIP program. We have strong academic partners in both the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and newly established CUNY School of Medicine, and an institutional commitment to population health management and perpetual service to our community. While the years ahead will certainly be dynamic, we look forward with great anticipation to our journey ahead, and have every expectation that we will continue to be a positive force in improving the lives and health of our patients and community together.
The Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine at SBH Health System is a strong advocate of this transformational change in healthcare, and deeply committed to providing primary care and hospital-based services to support the health and welfare of the South-Central Bronx community. As both outpatient ambulatory care physicians and inpatient hospital-based doctors, our clinicians are skilled and experienced in treating all adult-related health issues, and dedicated to the needs of our patients and their families. While the burden of chronic disease within the Bronx, specifically in terms of hypertension, diabetes, asthma/COPD, cancer, heart disease, and HIV is striking, we have partnered with patients, families, and other community agencies to improve health literacy, access to care, and overall disease related outcomes. This has required us to focus on evidence-based disease management and measured quality outcomes in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and to continue our efforts towards training and developing students, residents, and faculty who are well-versed in the understanding and promotion of these ideals.
Doctors within internal medicine see patients at our 422-bed flagship hospital campus on Third Avenue, as well as at outpatient ambulatory care sites located throughout the Bronx at:
SBH Ambulatory Care Center
Arthur Avenue Center for Comprehensive Care
Bronx Park Internal Medicine Associates
We offer:
Same-day appointments/sick-visit appointments
Routine care, follow-up for all medical conditions, employment screening, and vaccinations
Sub-specialty care (e.g., cardiology, GI, pulmonary, nephrology)
Weekend/evening hours at select locations
We accept a variety of insurance and other payment options.
