Bariatric surgery: a life-changing solution for weight loss
Is your weight affecting your mental and physical health to the point where you finally feel like enough is enough?
If you answered yes, you might want to consider bariatric surgery.
At SBH Health System, we offer a bariatric surgery program to help you achieve the results you want with the professional support you need.
What is bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is weight loss surgery. It involves removing part of your stomach, making it smaller to reduce the amount of food you can eat and give you a feeling of fullness sooner. Alternatively, it consists of rerouting the intestine, causing you to eat less, absorb less food and therefore absorb fewer calories.
Surgical options include gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.
How can bariatric surgery improve my health?
Weight loss isn’t the only benefit of bariatric surgery. It can also eliminate or reduce many of the symptoms associated with health conditions that often accompany being overweight or obese, like:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Sleep apnea
- Type 2 diabetes
A 2022 study found that bariatric surgery decreased the risk of cardiovascular (heart) disease by 49% in people diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and severe obesity.
What’s it like to undergo bariatric surgery at SBH Health?
We work with your primary care provider to ensure you receive the best care possible. We’re committed to making you feel comfortable, safe and supported throughout your weight loss journey. This includes providing care before and after surgery.
Your journey begins with a dietitian and a mental health professional to ensure that you’re ready to undergo this life-changing procedure. Your doctor will then discuss which surgery is best for you based on your goals.
During and after your procedure, you’ll have access to patient support groups. You can also take advantage of the programs we offer at our Health and Wellness Center to support the healthy lifestyle changes you need to make.
Everyone at SBH Health System is committed to providing personalized, quality care every step of the way.
“We’re not going to treat a patient like a number,” says Corneliu Vulpe, MD, chief of SBH Health’s bariatric program. “We build relationships with our patients so we can understand their unique needs.”
Dr. Vulpe and his team make sure that every patient understands the benefits bariatric surgery will have on their health outcomes in the long run.
