Choosing a hospital for your special delivery

When you’re expecting, you may feel like there are a million things you have to do before your baby’s debut.

From taking your prenatal vitamins and learning about childbirth to buying a stroller and stocking up on diapers, the list is long and can feel overwhelming. Just make sure you don’t forget to choose the hospital where you’ll give birth. In fact, you should include it at the top of your list of important to-dos. (Somewhere just below attending prenatal appointments and just above picking a pediatrician, perhaps.)

It’s one checklist item that can make all the difference in the delivery room. And begin a lifetime of firsts with your littlest family member.

What to look for in a maternity hospital

There are several factors you should consider when choosing the hospital where you’ll give birth:

  • Travel distance can affect your hospital decision. You don’t want to worry about having to go far or fight traffic when your baby is on the way.
  • Appropriate care resources is another important consideration. While it’s unlikely you’ll experience an emergency during your baby’s birth, it’s comforting to know that the hospital where you deliver can meet any challenge that arises — from a high-risk pregnancy to a premature birth.
  • Your birth plan can also impact where you choose to deliver. Are you considering a natural childbirth? You’ll want to pick a hospital that will work with you to achieve your goal.
  • Accommodations may also play a role. You want to feel safe and comfortable when you’re bringing new life into the world. That means a well-lit room, professional and compassionate caregivers, and a peaceful environment.

It’s also important to prioritize access and quality of care when deciding where to meet your little one for the first time.

Choosing a better experience with SBH Health System

When it comes to patient experience, no one delivers better than SBH Health System. Our providers are well-trained, well-experienced and well-established in the community they serve.

Offering concierge-like care close to home, SBH Health provides personalized attention. Not to mention a 1-to-1 nurse-to-patient ratio during labor not typically offered in an urban hospital setting.

“We have everything that other institutions have, but we also offer a personal touch,” says SBH Health System Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology Mark Rosing, MD. “That’s what sets us apart.”

SBH Health also provides a seamless continuum of care for patients — and the most positive birth experience possible.

Instead of rushing a patient to be induced or have a cesarean section (C-section), for example, our providers let labor progress naturally, giving women the time they want — and need — to deliver. “We encourage them to have the experience they want,” Dr. Rosing says. “And we give them the time and support to do it.”
