Admission Requirements/Eligibility
- Is the GRE an application requirement? The ADAT?
- You may submit your GRE and/or ADAT scores, but neither exam is required.
- Do I need a New York State (NYS) Dental license to enter the SBH Orthodontic Residency Program?
- Yes. In order to enter the orthodontic residency program, you must be eligible for a NYS dental license. If you do not already have a NYS dental license, you will need to apply for one before entry into the program. More details on the requirements for NYS licensure are available here. There are no exceptions to this requirement.
- Am I required to complete a General Practice Residency (GPR) Program in order to apply for the SBH Orthodontics Residency Program?
- Yes. If you have not completed a GPR, you may still be eligible to apply, as long as you have completed 2 years of work in a general dental practice prior to entry into the program.
- I am currently in a GPR program. Can I apply for SBH Orthodontics?
- Yes. You must complete the GPR program prior to entering SBH Orthodontics.
- I am currently a 3rd year dental student. Am I eligible to apply for SBH Orthodontics?
- No. All applicants must have completed a GPR/qualifying AEGD program OR have 2 years of work experience in a general dental program.
- Am I required to have 2 years of private practice experience in order to apply for the SBH Orthodontics Residency Program?
- If you have not completed a GPR you will need 2 years of general dental work experience to apply for the SBH Orthodontic Residency program. Your 2 years of work experience must be completed prior to entering the residency program.
- I completed an AEGD program. Am I eligible to apply for the SBH Orthodontic residency program?
- If your AEGD program qualifies you to apply for a New York State license, you are eligible to apply for SBH orthodontics. Contact the NY State Department to find out if your AEGD qualifies you for dental licensure in New York.
- I completed a specialty residency program (pediatrics, prosthodontics, periodontics etc.). Am I eligible to apply to SBH orthodontics?
- Yes
International Applicants
- Are international dentists eligible to apply for SBH Orthodontics?
- All applicants must have a DDS or DMD from an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school. Additionally, you must have completed a GPR/qualifying AEGD program OR have 2 years of work experience in a general dental program.
- What is the Minimum TOEFL score requirement?
- Although there is no set minimum TOEFL score required, 100 is a good benchmark for all international applicants.
Interview Process
- Will interviews for SBH Orthodontics be in-person or virtual?
- Interviews are in-person only.
- How many interviews are granted for each application cycle?
- SBH grants interviews to 20-25 applicants per cycle.
- May I apply to SBH Orthodontics outside of the PASS/MATCH system?
- No
- I am interested in SBH Orthodontics. Can I send my application materials and/or resume to the program director for pre-screening?
- Applications will only be assessed through the ADEA PASS system.
- May I visit the SBH Orthodontic Residency program?

Curriculum + Others
- Do SBH residents gain experience with the orthodontic treatment of craniofacial anomalies?
- SBH does not have a craniofacial team, therefore there are very few patients with craniofacial anomalies in the SBH Orthodontic clinic. However, the 3rd year residents attend monthly craniofacial conferences with the craniofacial team at nearby New York Presbyterian Hospital. Residents attend the monthly lecture series and round on patients with craniofacial anomalies.
- Do SBH residents gain experience with pre/post-surgical orthodontics?
- Residents have several orthognathic cases on their patient roster and are encouraged to participate in all parts of surgical-orthodontic care (virtual surgical planning, scrubbing into the surgery etc.). Residents have a routine lecture series on orthognathic surgery.
- Do SBH orthodontic residents have on-call duties in the hospital?
- SBH Orthodontic residents are part of the wider hospital community and share on-call duties with their dental colleagues in the GPR and Pediatric Dental programs, 1-2 times per month during their first year. All dental residents take head and neck trauma call under the supervision of oral surgery residents. Orthodontic residents are assigned first-call duties 1-2 times per month during their first year of the program. After first year, residents become on-call chiefs and have lesser on-call duties
- Do residents perform administrative duties?
- SBH orthodontic residents prepare the insurance submissions for patients who are covered under the NY State-sponsored health insurance plan (Medicaid). Residents are expected to keep track of their patient roster.
- Do residents discuss financial contracts with their patients?
- Yes
- Are residents required to know how to speak Spanish?
- SBH is located in an area with many Spanish-speaking patients, so knowledge of Spanish is useful but not required.
- Are residents required to complete the American Board of Orthodontics Clinical Board Exam?
- Residents are required to pass a Mock clinical board exam during the final year of the program. Although it is not a graduation requirement, residents are highly encouraged to pursue board certification, and most SBH graduates are board-certified.
