Care for kidney disease at every stage

Kidney disease often stems from common issues such as diabetes and hypertension, which are prevalent in the Bronx. Given that kidney disease often shows no symptoms, it is crucial for individuals with a family history of diabetes or high blood pressure to undergo regular check-ups with their physicians.

Kidney disease often stems from common issues, such as diabetes and hypertension, which are common in the Bronx community.

Kidney disease can affect your health before you notice any signs. That’s why people with a family history of diabetes or high blood pressure need regular checkups with their doctor.

At SBH Health System, our kidney specialists work to find problems early, protect your kidney function and guide you every step of the way. We care for people who may be at risk for kidney disease. But we also treat people with advanced kidney disease or kidney failure.

Our team sees you as a person, not just a diagnosis. We listen to your concerns, answer your questions and help you understand what comes next.

Our kidney disease services

Our kidney care team offers testing, treatment and support for many conditions. We care for patients at the hospital and at our outpatient clinics.

Kidney disease may not cause symptoms at first. Finding it early may help slow kidney damage and prevent other health problems.

We treat conditions such as:

  • Acute kidney injury
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Electrolyte problems
  • High blood pressure that’s hard to control
  • Kidney failure
  • Polycystic kidney disease

We can also monitor you if you may be at risk of developing kidney disease.

Kidney disease testing

Our testing services include:

  • Blood and urine tests
  • Genetic testing
  • Kidney biopsy

Some kidney diseases run in families. Genetic testing may help explain why kidney disease developed.

During a biopsy, a doctor removes a very small piece of tissue from the kidney. They then test the tissue to help find the cause of the problem and guide treatment.

Dialysis in the hospital

At SBH Health System, we provide dialysis for patients who need treatment during a hospital stay.

Our team also offers continuous renal replacement therapy, or CRRT. This is a slow form of dialysis used for some patients who are very sick. It runs for a longer time and may place less stress on the body.

Advanced kidney treatments

The advanced services we offer include:

  • Continuous renal replacement therapy, or CRRT
  • Dialysis catheter removal
  • Kidney biopsy
  • Plasmapheresis

Plasmapheresis removes and replaces the liquid part of the blood. We use it to treat some diseases that affect the kidneys.

Our team can remove some dialysis catheters during a clinic visit once they’re no longer needed.

Kidney transplant support

We refer patients to kidney transplant centers for testing and evaluation.

After a transplant, patients can return to SBH Health System for follow-up care. We work with the transplant team to help manage each patient’s health and support their recovery.

Education and ongoing support

Our team can explain:

  • What may be harming your kidneys
  • Which medicines and treatments may help
  • How food and fluid choices can affect your kidneys
  • How to manage diabetes and high blood pressure
  • What may help slow kidney damage
  • When you may need dialysis or a kidney transplant

Because costs, transportation and family needs can make kidney care harder, we listen to your concerns and help create a plan that works for you and your schedule.
