About our department

The Department of Psychiatry at SBH strives to improve the mental health and overall quality of life of our community’s diverse residents.

Our inpatient services

Our Adult Inpatient Service comprises two designated units with a total of 49 beds. It’s staffed by four psychiatrists, two clinical psychologists, one nurse practitioner, four social workers, three activity therapists and a number of nurses.

After they’re admitted, each patient is assigned to a treatment team that includes a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, primary nurse and activity therapist. This team oversees every aspect of the patient’s care.

During their admission, patients receive group and milieu therapies to help them cope with their illness and assist them in reducing their potential for relapse. They also may receive individual psychotherapy as needed.

As soon as a patient is admitted, discharge planning begins. The team works together to develop a safe and appropriate plan for the patient that will maximize their ability to function as independently as possible while reducing their potential for relapse. Follow-up and aftercare services are a crucial part of the discharge plan. SBH Behavioral Health provides these services for many patients.

Our Consultation-Liaison Service performs psychiatric evaluations on any patient admitted to another clinical service, such as surgery, pediatrics or emergency.

Our outpatient services

Through our outpatient programs, we provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive mental health services to adults and children starting at age 5. Services are provided by licensed social workers, mental health workers, a nurse and psychiatrists. Treatments, which include psychotherapy, crisis intervention and psychopharmacological services, are based on the individual needs of the patient after a thorough assessment and evaluation.

For adults, we treat and help manage:

  • Anger issues
  • Anxiety
  • At-risk behaviors
  • Bereavement
  • Depression
  • Domestic violence
  • Family conflicts
  • Hyperactivity
  • Marital difficulties
  • Mood disorders
  • Poor socialization skills
  • Schizophrenia
  • Substance abuse
