All you need for asthma, allergy and immunology

At SBH Health System, we know that asthma rates in the Bronx are among the highest in the country. We also know that asthma and allergies often occur together. We can help you find relief.

The same triggers, like pollen and pet dander that cause allergy symptoms can also cause asthma symptoms. (Think runny nose, itchy eyes and nasal congestion.) That’s why our specialists provide care for everything from asthma to allergies to weakened immune systems. They’re all related, and they can all make you feel miserable.

We’ll help you get to the root of the problem and then work with you to develop a plan to treat whatever’s ailing you. We’ll help you get the services you need so you cn live the life you want.

Our asthma, allergy and immunology services

From asthma management to allergy testing and everything in between, our specialists have you covered.

Our experts are highly trained in diagnosing and treating asthma, allergies and other conditions that affect the lungs. That can include immune disorders, which are health issues that weaken the immune system and cause you to get sick and develop other health problems, like lung and sinus infections, more easily — and more often.

We can help with medication management, teach you how to properly use an inhaler, and help you learn how to avoid and reduce common asthma and allergy triggers. We also offer lung function tests and lung cancer screenings, as well as programs related to tobacco use and sleep.

Conditions we treat

The conditions we treat include:

  • Allergies, including those related to food, the environment or medicine
  • Asthma, for both children and adults
  • Acute and chronic hives
  • Chronic rashes
  • Chronic sinus problems
  • Eczema
  • Immunodeficiency

Lung Testing

Our providers perform lung function tests, which measure the amount of air your lungs can hold. They also calculate how forcefully you can release air from your lungs. We most commonly use a lung function test called spirometry. It’s used to diagnose diseases like asthma, COPD and pulmonary hypertension.

We also perform lung volume tests, which assess the volume of air in the lungs. These kinds of tests are more precise than spirometry and can help us determine if you have asthma if your other test results are normal. Additionally, we may perform lung diffusion capacity tests, which measure how well your lungs deliver oxygen to your blood from the air you breathe, and exercise tests, which evaluate how well your lungs work when you’re active.

Allergy testing

We can perform allergy testing for people at any age. That means allergy relief sooner for even the youngest children.

If you learn you have an allergy, we offer treatments based on your diagnosis, needs and preferences. That may include allergy shots and medicines, nasal sprays and eye drops. Also, if you have asthma and medicine isn’t working, you may qualify for a biologic treatment, which is a targeted treatment that helps control your asthma symptoms.

Your doctor will help you decide what treatment is best for you and your specific condition.

Immunodeficiency management

The immune system helps protect the body from harmful substances like bacteria, viruses and cancer. When the immune system is weakened or damaged, it can’t protect the body as well, meaning you tend to get sick more often.

We can help diagnose immunodeficiency — in yourself or your child — and better manage it. That may mean preventing infections from developing in the first place and treating any that do develop quickly.

Skin condition treatments

Some common skin conditions, such as eczema, may be worsened by allergies. Identifying your triggers may help improve your symptoms. While other rashes, such as chronic hives, are not usually due to allergies, our team can help come up with a treatment plan that will help control the hives and improve your quality of life.
