Your Breath of Fresh Air: Advanced Pulmonary Care for The Bronx Community
In The Bronx, where asthma, COPD, and smoking-related lung conditions are widespread, The Department of Pulmonary Medicine delivers cutting-edge diagnostic and critical care for diverse pulmonary diseases. We provide specialized services for conditions like sleep-related breathing disorders and lung infections, ensuring top-quality care tailored to our community needs.
Pulmonary services at SBH
We have strategically integrated our department with critical care services to enhance the management of these prevalent conditions. This integration allows us to deliver more coordinated and effective care, ensuring that our patients receive comprehensive support throughout their treatment journey.
By structuring our services around the specific needs of our patients, we aim to promote early recovery, prevent hospital re-admissions, and significantly improve their overall quality of life.
Pulmonary Services
These sessions, available both in the morning and afternoon, are conducted face-to-face and by phone, catering to a variety of conditions including COPD, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and pulmonary hypertension (pHTN). Our goal is to provide personalized care and effective management for each patient, addressing their specific pulmonary needs.
Asthma Immunological Therapy
Our clinic administers Xolair and Nucala, immunologic subcutaneous injections given every 2 to 4 weeks, to help manage these challenging cases. With 100 to 150 patients regularly attending these sessions, we are committed to offering cutting-edge treatments.
Additionally, we are in the process of applying for Fasenra, a new immunologic therapy, to further enhance our treatment options and support our patients’ asthma management.
Lung cancer screening
Patients who meet the criteria for further investigation benefit from advanced procedures, including EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) and IR-guided biopsies, conducted within four weeks at our center.
Our diagnostic yield, ranging from 60% to 80%, is on par with other leading centers, reflecting the effectiveness of our screening process.
Pulmonary function tests
We have three specialized rooms designed to keep any potential virus from spreading, with one room used specifically for these tests.
Before a PFT is performed, patients are tested for COVID-19, and our respiratory therapists wear special protective gear called a PAPR (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator) to keep both themselves and the patients safe. The other two rooms are used for general pulmonary outpatient visits.
Advanced Diagnostic Tests
EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound) uses a specialized ultrasound device inserted into the lungs to capture detailed images, which aids in identifying abnormalities and guiding further treatment.
Bronchoscopy involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the airways to directly view the inside of the lungs. This procedure allows us to examine the lungs closely and take samples for testing if necessary.
Thoracentesis is another key test that involves removing excess fluid from around the lungs using a needle. This procedure can help diagnose the cause of fluid buildup and relieve pressure on the lungs, improving breathing comfort.
Together, these tests offer a comprehensive approach to understanding and treating lung conditions, ensuring we provide the best possible care for our patients.
