Expert trauma care for critical cases in the Bronx
Our trauma team includes expertly trained, certified trauma and critical care surgeons with decades of experience managing cases, from the simplest to the most complex.
As a Level II Trauma Center, we work with other surgical experts to provide immediate care to injured patients. We’re here for you from the time you come into the hospital to the time you leave, covering the acute phase through rehabilitation and home recovery — and providing you with the highest-quality care that’s focused solely on you and your individual needs. Our trauma service includes prevention, prehospital care and transport, in-patient acute management, rehabilitation, and post hospital care.
Our trauma services
Not every hospital can manage trauma cases. SBH Health System can. That is because we are equipped with the most advanced technologies and treatment advances, and staffed by a team of expert surgeons who care about you as a person — not just as a patient.
Our team is dedicated to staying current on the latest evidence-based practices for managing trauma, so we can deliver the best possible outcomes to the community we serve. We’re also committed to helping patients avoid disability, long-term injuries and conditions that would affect their quality of life.
At SBH Health System, our goal is helping you recover in a warm, comfortable setting, then getting you back on your feet as quickly and safely as possible. In addition to caring for trauma patients, our providers strive to reduce injuries in the community by hosting prevention programs for both children and adults.
Level II Trauma Center
Because we’re a designated Level II Trauma Center, we’re authorized to treat critically ill and severely injured patients in the Bronx. As one of the community’s busiest trauma centers, we care for more than 1,200 trauma patients each year.
Our team consists of full-time surgeons with certifications in both trauma and critical care medicine, and with specialties in areas including:
- Breast
- Cardiothoracic
- Colorectal
- ENT
- Hand
- Neurosurgery
- Oral and maxillofacial
- Ophthalmology
- Orthopedics
- Plastic
- Podiatry
- Urologic
- Vascular
The Trauma Center team also collaborates with Emergency Medicine team, Radiologists, Anesthesiologists, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Internal Medicine, Critical-Care Medicine, Nephrologists, Cardiologists, Pulmonologists, Registered Professional Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Nutritionists, Social workers, Chaplain, and non-medical staff to provide all the patient’s need while under our care.
General surgery
General surgeons diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions before, during and after surgery. While some surgical specialties focus on the brain or the heart, general surgeons tend to focus on procedures in the abdomen or musculoskeletal system, or care for multiple injuries.
Our surgeons may perform common procedures including:
- Appendix removal
- Gallbladder removal
- Hernia repair
- Spleen removal
Trauma surgery
At SBH Health System, we specialize in performing emergency surgeries on people who have suffered a critical injury or illness. We may treat injuries sustained from penetrating burns or blunt trauma, including those caused by car accidents, violence-related injuries, falls falls or stab wounds, as well as critical illnesses, like sepsis, respiratory failure or multi-organ failure.
We work with other doctors and surgeons to determine the best treatment course for you, and we follow up with you after your surgery and through recovery.
Specialty surgery
At SBH Health System, we know that caring for our community means caring for a diverse population with diverse needs. We also know that some of our patients’ needs stem from complicated trauma cases. That’s why we specialize in areas including oral and maxillofacial, neurology, orthopedics, ENT, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.
Our commitment is to provide the highest quality care in the most compassionate possible setting.
