Our residency program benefits include:

• 20 days of paid vacation per year
• Sick leave accrual (one day per month the first year, then 12 days per year)
• A $650 annual stipend
• Salary commensurate with postgraduate year

All conditions of employment, including compensation and benefits, are negotiated with the Committee of Interns and Residents SEIU, which represents all interns, residents and fellows.

Applications are accepted from graduates of DDS or DMD programs at accredited U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

We maintain the following eligibility requirements:

• Completion of:
  • A general practice residency (GPR), qualifying AEGD program or specialty residency (e.g., pediatrics, prosthodontics, periodontics, etc.) program
    OR
  • Two years of work in a general dental practice

• Submission of:
  • A $100 application fee
  • Undergraduate transcript
  • Dental school transcript
  • Proof of successful completion of NBDE I and NBDE II exams or INBDE
  • Between three and five letters of recommendation
  • 2”x2” photo

While you may submit your GRE and/or ADAT scores, neither is required. In addition, you must register for the Dental Match.

You must also be eligible for a New York state dental license. If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to apply for one before entering the program. There are no exceptions to this.

Although there isn’t a minimum TOEFL score required, 100 is a good benchmark for international applicants.

The SBH Orthodontics Residency Program follows written, nondiscriminatory policies and procedures in the recruitment and selection of residents. Applications are considered only through ADEA PASS, and applicants must also participate in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program.

The program conducts a holistic review of each completed application. Applicants are evaluated based on:

• Academic performance
• Clinical education and experience
• Research, teaching, service, leadership and other professional experiences
• Letters of reference
• Personal statement and demonstrated interest in orthodontics

Selected applicants are invited to an in-person interview which includes standardized multiple mini-interview stations. Interviews are conducted by facutly members and residents who use standardized questions and scoring criteria to evaluate qualities relevant to residency training, including communication, professionalism, interpersonal skills, judgment, maturity, and motivation.

Following the interviews, the orthodontic faculty selection committee reviews the application and interview information and approves the program’s final rank list. The program participates in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program and does not offer positions outside the MATCH.

Applicants receive application and interview-status notifications through ADEA PASS and/or the email address provided in their application. Final selection results are communicated through the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program and confirmed by phone correspondence with the Program Director.
