The three-year, paid Orthodontics Residency Program at SBH Health System blends advanced training with a deep commitment to the community. Since 2001, we’ve been shaping the future of orthodontics by nurturing skilled professionals who deliver compassionate care.
Our residents have access to specialties like oral surgery, pediatric dentistry and dental anesthesia. As a resident, you’ll also have the chance to attend regional and national orthodontic conferences. Because we expect involvement in organized dentistry, all residents become members of the American Association of Orthodontists, and we encourage you to pursue approved continuing education experiences, as well.
In addition, as one of our residents, you’ll be joining an esteemed group: SBH Health System orthodontic residents consistently rank among the top-performing residents nationwide on their written board exams. SBH alumni have a strong history of challenging the clinical ABO exam and achieving diplomate status.
The SBH Orthodontics Residency Program has been providing comprehensive didactic and clinical training to orthodontic trainees for nearly 25 years. Our program is proud to be part of the SBH Health System, a nonsectarian acute care community hospital in the Bronx, one of the most racially and ethnically diverse areas in the country. We provide necessary and compassionate care to a community with a high volume of dental needs. Among our top priorities is fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging in our patients and residents.
As a career dental academician and graduate of Columbia University’s Teachers College, I place a high priority on providing students with the foundational orthodontic knowledge they need to form a deep understanding of our profession. You’ll have a lecture or case presentation every morning during your first year. In your second and third years, your didactic course load will decrease but remain a vital part of the program.
Along with the strong didactic focus, we offer our orthodontic residents a rigorous clinical experience. Our orthodontic buddy system, for example, allows you to enter the clinic early in July and begin administering direct care with the support of a third-year peer. We also offer expert one-on-one training in all aspects of fixed and removable orthodontic treatment from a dedicated team of faculty members who have experience in academia and private practice.
As a resident, you’ll have the opportunity to gain experience across all types of treatment modalities, including traditional edgewise orthodontics, functional appliances, clear aligner therapy, lingual braces and temporary anchorage devices.
We have a digitally integrated workflow with a 3D printer, two iTero scanners, cloud-based lab submissions and a CBCT machine. During your third year, as a graduation requirement, you must present cases in a mock clinical board format. You also must complete a research project and prepare a manuscript.

All conditions of employment, including compensation and benefits, are negotiated with the Committee of Interns and Residents SEIU, which represents all interns, residents and fellows.

Applications are accepted from graduates of DDS or DMD programs at accredited U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

While you may submit your GRE and/or ADAT scores, neither is required. In addition, you must register for the Dental Match.
You must also be eligible for a New York state dental license. If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to apply for one before entering the program. There are no exceptions to this.
Although there isn’t a minimum TOEFL score required, 100 is a good benchmark for international applicants.
Apply through PASS for our residency program by Aug. 15.
Once we review all applications, we typically interview between 20 and 25 applicants per cycle. Interviews are held in person. We take four residents each year.
Our program start date is July 1, with orientation the final week of June.

Our Orthodontic Residency Program is part of the larger Department of Dentistry & Oral Surgery at SBH, which includes residencies in general practice, pediatrics and dental anesthesia. In total, there are more than 40 dental residents enrolled each year at SBH.
Our residents are highly interconnected, working at the same site and sharing many complex interdisciplinary restorative and orthognathic cases. In fact, as a first-year orthodontic resident, you’ll share on-call duties once or twice a month with your dental colleagues in the general practice and pediatric dental residency programs. On-call duties are less frequent in the second and third years, but all dental residents take some head and neck trauma calls under the supervision of oral surgery residents.
