Diabetes heavily impacts minority and low-income populations, who often lack access to proper care. Many residents are unaware they have pre-diabetes or full diabetes, making early screening crucial. In response, SBH created the Diabetes Center to educate, screen, and treat residents.

At SBH Health System, we know that asthma rates in the Bronx are among the highest in the country. We also know that asthma and allergies often occur together. We can help you find relief.
The same triggers, like pollen and pet dander that cause allergy symptoms can also cause asthma symptoms. (Think runny nose, itchy eyes and nasal congestion.) That’s why our specialists provide care for everything from asthma to allergies to weakened immune systems. They’re all related, and they can all make you feel miserable.
We’ll help you get to the root of the problem and then work with you to develop a plan to treat whatever’s ailing you. We’ll help you get the services you need so you cn live the life you want.
Our asthma, allergy and immunology servicesFrom asthma management to allergy testing and everything in between, our specialists have you covered.
Our experts are highly trained in diagnosing and treating asthma, allergies and other conditions that affect the lungs. That can include immune disorders, which are health issues that weaken the immune system and cause you to get sick and develop other health problems, like lung and sinus infections, more easily — and more often.
We can help with medication management, teach you how to properly use an inhaler, and help you learn how to avoid and reduce common asthma and allergy triggers. We also offer lung function tests and lung cancer screenings, as well as programs related to tobacco use and sleep.
Conditions we treatWe can help diagnose and treat a wide range of health issues that affect the lungs, sinuses and the skin. Our specialists are highly trained and board-certified physicians in their fields — and they’re all dedicated to helping you have the highest quality of life possible.Conditions we treatThe conditions we treat include:
- Allergies, including those related to food, the environment or medicine
- Asthma, for both children and adults
- Acute and chronic hives
- Chronic rashes
- Chronic sinus problems
- Eczema
- Immunodeficiency
Our providers perform lung function tests, which measure the amount of air your lungs can hold. They also calculate how forcefully you can release air from your lungs. We most commonly use a lung function test called spirometry. It’s used to diagnose diseases like asthma, COPD and pulmonary hypertension.
We also perform lung volume tests, which assess the volume of air in the lungs. These kinds of tests are more precise than spirometry and can help us determine if you have asthma if your other test results are normal. Additionally, we may perform lung diffusion capacity tests, which measure how well your lungs deliver oxygen to your blood from the air you breathe, and exercise tests, which evaluate how well your lungs work when you’re active.
Allergy testingWe can diagnose and treat allergies in both adults and children. Whether they’re allergies related to food, the environment or certain medicines, we offer testing and treatments to help you feel like yourself again.Allergy testingWe can perform allergy testing for people at any age. That means allergy relief sooner for even the youngest children.
If you learn you have an allergy, we offer treatments based on your diagnosis, needs and preferences. That may include allergy shots and medicines, nasal sprays and eye drops. Also, if you have asthma and medicine isn’t working, you may qualify for a biologic treatment, which is a targeted treatment that helps control your asthma symptoms.
Your doctor will help you decide what treatment is best for you and your specific condition.
Immunodeficiency managementIf you have an infection that keeps coming back or won’t go away, you may need to be checked for immunodeficiency. Immunodeficiency refers to a problem with the immune system that makes it not work as well as it should.Immunodeficiency managementThe immune system helps protect the body from harmful substances like bacteria, viruses and cancer. When the immune system is weakened or damaged, it can’t protect the body as well, meaning you tend to get sick more often.
We can help diagnose immunodeficiency — in yourself or your child — and better manage it. That may mean preventing infections from developing in the first place and treating any that do develop quickly.
Skin condition treatmentsThe dermatologists at SBH Health System often refer patients with rashes, hives and eczema to us so we can check them for allergies.Skin condition treatmentsSome common skin conditions, such as eczema, may be worsened by allergies. Identifying your triggers may help improve your symptoms. While other rashes, such as chronic hives, are not usually due to allergies, our team can help come up with a treatment plan that will help control the hives and improve your quality of life.

The heart is one of the body’s vital organs. It acts as the body’s power supply — pumping blood and oxygen to every cell. If something affects your heart’s ability to pump blood to the body, it can cause serious health problems.
A look at our cardiology servicesIn the 1950s, SBH Health System became the first hospital in the country to offer open-heart surgery. Today, we’re still serving the Bronx community with the latest in technologies and treatments, coupled with compassionate care.
At SBH Health System, we have a team of board-certified general and specialized cardiologists available around the clock to diagnose and treat the full range of heart problems. We understand our patients’ diverse cultures and needs. And we offer the same high-quality care you’d find at any major medical center, delivered with a community feel. Our team always puts you first — not your diagnosis — and we show that focus through the kind of care we provide our patients each and every day.
Whether you’re struggling with shortness of breath or heart palpitations, or noticing an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), we can help get your heart healthy again.
Our robust services cover everything from heart disease prevention to advanced therapies for myocardial infarctions (heart attacks). And our specialists collaborate with one another to provide a comprehensive treatment plan that’s personalized to you.
Cardiac imagingWe offer a variety of imaging tests to diagnose and manage heart conditions.Cardiac imagingCardiac imaging refers to tests that take pictures of the heart and its surrounding structures. Our cardiologists use the images to diagnose heart conditions. They also use the images to monitor existing heart conditions and determine how well treatments are working.
The cardiac imaging tests we offer include:
- Electrocardiograms, or EKG
Electrocardiograms look for changes in the heart’s electrical impulses that might indicate a heart-related condition. - Echocardiograms, or echo
We offer both routine and transesophageal echocardiograms, which use ultrasound technology to examine the heart and look for problems. - Stress tests
Heart stress tests evaluate heart function and blood flow. Different types of stress tests include nuclear stress tests, Holter monitors and event recorders.
The providers at our cardiac catheterization lab are available 24/7 to diagnose and treat heart conditions like:
- Cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle)
- Congestive heart failure (chronic condition where the heart doesn’t pump blood as well as it should)
- Heart defects
- Heart disease
- Problems with heart valves
- Pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs and heart)
We offer heart interventional procedures including:
- Balloon angioplasty (surgical widening of a blocked or narrow blood vessel)
- Cardiac catheterization (treatment for heart and blood vessel problems, such as clogged arteries or irregular heart rhythm)
- Stenting (surgically placed tubes used to hold open weak or narrowed blood vessels)
- Thrombectomy (surgical removal of blood clots from an artery or vein)
Heart failure is typically caused by conditions like narrowed arteries in the heart (coronary artery disease) or high blood pressure that can leave your heart too weak or stiff to fill and pump blood effectively. Not all conditions that lead to heart failure can be reversed, but we can treat your heart failure to improve your symptoms, help you live longer and improve your quality of life.
Our multidisciplinary cardiology team provides evaluation and follow-up for both systolic and diastolic heart failure
Arrhythmia servicesOur dedicated electrophysiology lab provides a wide range of services to patients with arrhythmia. Arrhythmia servicesArrhythmias occur when the flow of electrical impulses that coordinate the heart’s contractions change and cause fast or irregular heartbeats. The most common type of arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly and blood doesn’t flow as well as it should to the lower chambers of the heart. We can treat many of the symptoms associated with atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, like heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, dizziness or fainting.
Your treatment options will typically depend on the severity of your arrhythmia, but may include implantable devices, like pacemakers, or surgical procedures, like catheter ablation, to correct the electrical pathway.
Thoracic cardiology programOur comprehensive thoracic program is dedicated to diagnosing and treating problems related to the heart, blood vessels and lungs. Thoracic cardiology programOur cardiothoracic surgeons collaborate with our cardiologists to treat cardiovascular and thoracic conditions. They use sophisticated, minimally invasive procedures to repair valves that didn’t form properly, aren’t working as well as they should or are diseased. Our cardiothoracic surgeons also treat cancers, including lung and esophageal.
