The Department of Pathology and Laboratories at SBH Health System offers a full range of diagnostic services in anatomic pathology and clinical laboratory to both hospitalized patients and patients in the community. Our main facility is a state-of-the-art, full service, high complexity and computerized laboratory accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), New York State Department of Health, American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the Joint Commission. We are staffed with board-certified pathologists, NYS licensed medical technologists and a team of highly skilled phlebotomists.
In Anatomic Pathology, diagnoses rendered by pathologists are based on a thorough examination of the tissues and cells in body fluids, PAP smears or fine needle aspiration sent for analysis by other physicians. More than 6,000 surgical specimens, 5,000 PAP smears and 1,500 general cytology specimens are examined each year.
The Clinical Laboratory operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and performs more than three million tests annually. We offer quality diagnostic services in laboratory medicine with sections devoted to clinical chemistry (including immunology), hematology, microbiology, point-of-care testing, and blood bank. An integrated laboratory information system allows for rapid reporting and remote access to results for patient management. Within the hospital, point-of-care testing offers bedside glucose monitoring and other tests in the operating room and cardiac catheterization room.
Under the direction of pathologists, the clinical laboratories test results on blood and other body fluids and tissues to provide diagnostic information for the treatment of diseases. They will be provided to the ordering physician who will dispense and explain the information to their patients.
