Allergy/Immunology

Many children in the Bronx, more so than anywhere else in New York City, are affected by asthma. All too often, this chronic lung condition is triggered by allergens found both inside and outside the home. Our fellowship-trained and board certified pediatric allergist works to identify the triggers in patients and will put together a proactive plan that is intended to prevent exacerbations before they occur – and keep children out of the hospital and emergency department whenever possible.

Behavioral and Development

Our board certified developmental-behavioral specialist works collaboratively with a team of professionals to evaluate, counsel and provide treatment for children, adolescents and their families with a wide range of developmental and behavioral difficulties. This includes:

  • Learning disorders (including dyslexia)
  • Behavioral disorders (such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity, oppositional-defiant behavior, anxiety disorders, depression)
  • Habit disorders (Tics)
  • Regulatory disorders (involving sleep, feeding, toilet-training, bedwetting)
  • Development disabilities (cerebral palsy, autism spectrum, visual and hearing impairment)
  • Behavioral and developmental issues complicating the full range of pediatric chronic illnesses and disabling conditions (such as epilepsy, genetic disorders, diabetes, asthma, cancer)

Sleep Medicine

Pediatric sleep disorders, ranging from infants to adolescents, are common, and have been associated with academic, behavioral, developmental and social difficulties; weight abnormalities; and other health problems. Not only do they affect the child’s health, but they can impact on family dynamics and parental or sibling sleep.

Our Sleep Center offers testing for children, both in our sleep center and at home, to study their sleeping and breathing habits. Under the leadership of our medical director – a pediatrician who is board certified in sleep medicine – the center evaluates and treats children for a host of sleep problems. Common sleeping disorders in children include:

  • Arousal Disorders
  • Snoring
  • Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Central Sleep Apnea
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Insomnia
  • Nighttime Sleep Behaviors/Parasomnias

Neonatology

Neonatology is a specialty of pediatrics that focuses on treating premature infants or infants with critical medical conditions.  Neonatologists are pediatricians who have completed advanced training to treat newborns and infants with critical conditions.

The St. Barnabas Hospital Division of Neonatology includes the Well Baby Nursery (WBN) and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  Four full-time neonatologists staff the department, with 24-hour attending coverage.

A Level III NICU cares for babies born at less than 32 weeks gestation, as well as babies born with critical illness at all gestational ages. Our NICU offers prompt and readily available access to a full range of pediatric medical subspecialties, including a full range of respiratory support and advanced imaging services.

ENT

Children routinely have problems with their ears, nose and throat. In fact, it’s been estimated that more than 80 percent of children experience an ear infection by the age of three. In many cases, your doctor may refer your child to an otolaryngologist (also known as an ENT) for disorders of the ear, nose or throat.

An ENT may help treat your child with persistent ear infections, hearing loss, breathing issues or sinus problems. This is the specialist who will determine if your child needs ear tubes put in or tonsils/adenoids removed.
